Bumble Bee Balbina is 'Battle of Giants' champion

Richard Bates and Danding Cojuangco's entry scored a near perfect 6.5 points to emerge as solo champion in last night's "play for the pot, battle of the giants" 7-cock one day derby.

There were a total of 26 entries, guaranteeing a total prize of 13M, of which 8M goes to the champ, 1M for the runner-up and 1.275M for any 5. The rest goes to the 30,000 per win per fight. Draw fights receive 15,000 each entry. All these came from the pot money fee of .55M per entry.

Bumble Bee defeated PA early on, demolished PCCA's(Pasay Cockpit Cockers Assn) Jun Topacio and drew with Jessie Viceo's San Rafael entry(his only score for the day- a draw and all losses).

P.A. was runnerup with 5.5, and maybe Dicky Lim(he has a fight left when we went home). Derby was finished 6am Sunday, 6 April.

Sonny Lagon's Blue Blade entry was all set to finish with 6 wins and have a chance for the insurance(Bumblebee has yet to fight its last) but lost to Bog's II of Meycauayan Mayor Alarilla with the odds pegged at doblado(10-5). It's a Bruce Barnett sweater all the way for Blue Blade, and they all fought ferociously and beautifully.

Entries who gave away their 550K pot money were Hermosa I and Hermosa II of Butch Africa(3 wins out 13 fights). Also Agilahas-BL of Comm. Ashley Arayata and Boy Lechon. And how can we forget the entry of Mayor Joson(Nueva Ecija) - MBJ, it scored only 1 out of 7, his fights, all dehado in 10-6 betting odds.

PCCA(Pasay Cockpit) fielded their aces and multi-winners from the various farm members and almost made it as they racked up 3 spectacular wins early on but could not sustain the rest of program. DVH and Mr. Palmares' cocks were also there but also not as lucky as Bumble Bee.

Mr. Vic Yu combined with Benjie Lim(recently crowned 8-cock Mercedes Benz champion) for the StarWars entry but was not consistent. Jun Marasigan's JM Intruder(9-cock International champ) has also a strong start but faltered in the homestretch.

All in all, it was a llamadista's dream come true last night. They came in droves 8 straight and 7 straight favorites winning easily. Unfortunately, I am not. :)

One of the highlights of the 'Battle of Giants' derby was fight # 42. The stage was set between two tough entries - Blue Blade Sagupaan and Stagwars. Sonny Lagon fielded a 23-month Bruce sweater, a winner during the last January WSD. While Benjie Lim used an equally well-bred sweater but certainly looked old enough. On the meron side was Blue Blade Sagupaan while Stagwars was on the wala. Both birds were beautiful but ferocious-looking. But Benjie's sweater was lighter and had more white streamers on its tail. Both birds were in top shape. Sonny whispered to me, " mas lamang tayo sa abilidad pero mas magulang sila." The Blue Blade Sagupaan's center bet was P507T. It was evenly squared. The odds was 10:9.

Benjie personally released his bird. It is good to note that Benjie wore exactly the same shirt when he won solo the Mercedes Benz derby just recently. While on the meron side, Gildo who tied the knife for Blue Blade released the bird with his 'patented' and amusing style. Both birds were heady waiting for the opponent to make a wrong move. Suddenly, the Stagwars made an initial ferocious attack unleashing multiple shuffles. It was on top of the Blue Blade Sagupaan. It looked like the meron was badly hurt. But when both birds were on the ground, Blue Blade rallied immediately. It connected major blows. As both birds became limping, there was no clear advantage. However, the Stagwars bird was a bit stronger. When I looked at Sonny I saw an uneasy face. He said, " ano lamang ba tayo?" I answered back "tumutusik pa naman tayo eh." After some exchanged of blows the fight was about even. Suddenly I heard a voice not from afar. It was that of PA! He said, "Sonny tabla o panalo na lang yan, wala ng katalo-talo pare." I immediately seized the moment and I said to Sonny,"partner na pala kayo ngayon pre ha." I looked at my friend and I saw a boyish smile while he tapped my butt.

I looked at the timer it was past the halftime mark. Sonny became more worried since his bird was younger. The Stagwars' bird was still shuffling but could not make a damage anymore. What is good though Blue Blade was only pecking as both legs were badly damaged. That was the moment when I felt we had a good chance. Sonny was not with me anymore. He went at the upper deck to join the group of Lance and Ricoy perhaps asking for moral support. The last two minutes was announced by the pit manager. Many felt the fight would be a draw. When less than a minute was all the was left at the timer the Stagwars' bird made one last shuffle. Afterwhich, it expired! The meron made its final winning pecks. Much to the delight of the llamadistas. Sonny made made some high fives to his friends.

I went down to look for the marking and wing band number of the bird as usual hehehe....
