Photo taken after his 3rd Blue ribbon in the American Show. He has won 5 blue ribbon now. He is pretty tall for for a 4"10 lbs bird.

This is an old old old photo of a Ruble cock that I scanned, it is at least 20 yrs old. Nothing has changed, no other blood added.

I also have Maurice Cohen's blueface, those in the know.......Know what Im talking about.

Folks,

My most memorable fight, still stuck in my head was my Blueface. After the first handle I lost both eyes. After the second handle I had a broke wing still with both eyes blinked and the opponent was untouched. In the third the opponent was stone dead, the blueface let go a shuffle that felt like it took forever. When he finished the other bird was lifeless. The best way to appreciate a Ruble is in the Spur....2 1/4 inch or shorter is enough. Half Ruble and Half Kelso and you wont be looking for another bird in any weapon.

Wildfoot, that is so nice, i like your rubles, the old photo he is a small station? unlike the onther one is realy tall. but it is both beutiful, good luck to your breeding, b

By the way my ruble Cock is Blue legs, and the 2 Hens are green legs, if they get a ofspring what is best to get, the green leged or the blue leged cock? Thanks.

i prefer the blue leg, i had this cock before unfortunately he died from the wound inflicted by his opponent after 3 days. He had a record of 2 wins, his second win was a standing ovation performance, pittted against a big time breeder, being a dehado (lo-tres) but as wildfoot description that they were letting go a multiple shuffle that seemed forever, the opponent didnt stand a chance in a blow by blow unleased by this cock.

Billy had some fast ones and some that kicked like a mule the power ones..the blue legged tends to be faster than the green legs but I have been lucky with the green legged. If you ask billy they are the same bird. I get more blue legged hens now though. All my Broodcoks are Green legged apart from one blue leg....The hens majority are blue but I dont pay attention to it as I linebreed so I am limited by those breeding principles regardless of leg color. I have a pen with both green leg but this only by chance, Father Daughter breeding.

Tonio, these are Billy's blueface muff. Kept them as I received them, I cross them to my Unmuffed Blueface for my battle cross as they add cut. Billy's blueface on their own are not good cutters but with the muffs their cutting ability increases 10 fold.

thats where my ruble came from, he still keeps that line as pure as he could be, at the back of his house. hehehehehehehe.

As what my father told me, his late father who received that gift from billy ruble was once working in the importation of animals in our country, i dont know what branch is this but he holds a good position at that time.

the first person in iloilo who breeds billy ruble fowls in our province is nene zulueta, as what my father have told me, he went to the states just to get this bloodline......i hope he still keeps this line.

thanks sir lex. the original hen was just a gift to my carpenter neighbor sometime when he got a contract with a bigtime breeder/cocker from Laguna to build the rest houses inside the farm. the farmhand of this WSC participant gave him the original hen (a golden blue hatch). i will not post here which farm owner to protect his farmhands. they said that this blueface is the base blood of their warriors. good to fight pure though but lacks the station therefore it is best to cross with other bloodlines.

all the offsprings of this hen are winners so far. i will test some stags this coming summer.

Here is the Pure Billy Ruble 100% Authentic Pure, from one of the 3 store of Billy in Ohio long time a go, before he shot all his chicken, the caretaker of the store keep the pure lines of this, and i got form them,.. Stephen Jacksons Parents is the one who are selling in this store.

Billy Ruble was the originator of the Ruble Hatch (http://www.gamefowlfacts.org/wiki/Ruble_Hatch) breed.
Billy Ruble form Wellsville, Ohio is widely known for his Ruble hath cocks. Ruble hatch were some the hardest hitting gamefowl, they hit like a bull and would be game enough to lay and peck for days if he had to, and the rubles were made of steel, you had to kill every feather in them, if the cold cut somebody would be in trouble.
Billy is most widely known for his hatch, but ruble also had muffs and greys that could hold there own, Billy's muffs or greys never hit as hard as his hatch but cut 50x better,
SUMMERY Billy created the worst fighting(they couldn't cut a lick) but the best hatch for crossing

Five year old thread about Bill Ruble fowl needed more information. As was announced by Osage Farm (which might have been deleted), Mr. Bill E. Ruble passed on October 17, 2010.
I sat next to him at Springbrook and he talked with me. Would have been smart of me to asked him many questions but I didn't. He just told me he was in the Philippines and know some people over there.

I had the chance to visit with Ruble up at Springbrook several years ago, a bunch of guys just sttin around and he signed a couple autographs. After awhile everybody got gone but Ruble and i, thats when i got the benefit of listening to one of the great chicken minds of our time.
Ruble did not brag or boast about how good his fowl was, he was telling me how poor the competition was he was meeting during the time he dominated our sport.
Now, realise this the biggest cockfighting venue in the country during the 40's 50's and 60's was The Boxwood pit in virginia, USA and a big derby back in the day would not be over 24 to maybe 30 entrys, this from an old timer i know in NC, this man was telling me that nobody but a handfull had good bred cocks during the early years and the only way to obtain those were to steal them or be gifted them, because only the rich or famous cockers of that period had access.
Only (2) cockers have ever mentioned "feed responce" to me, one being Ruble and the other being Harold Brown, not in person but in some of his written material on gamefowl. The story i kee getting was the Billy Ruble blood and the Harold Brown blood all came from the same stuff and that was Ted Driskell, big Ted used to rub shoulders with the big horse people and someone might back me on this, i'm thinking he was a millionaire and even raced horses too.
I'm convinced both these men had blood that came from the same place at some time or another and with them mentioning Feed Responce, that put it together for me. Ruble and Hugh Norman are the (2) most intelligent cockers i ever met! however NX, nels Thompson was the most brilliant rooster man that has ever been, period!!

Mike Everett
December 19th, 2010, 11:16 PM
I think your way off base about Ted Driskel. He was no millionaire, just owned a small rural water company near Waco. His keep pills were just Poultry Plus he had workers at Good Will repackaging for him. He couldn't even compete with the locals, when he would lose which was quite often, he would say he would just sell more pills.

brownred kelso
December 19th, 2010, 11:27 PM
Thank you for correcting me, that's just what i had been told or read or something over he years, i did not know Ted Driskel, but have read he got some of that good hatch blood coming out of Kentucky at one time, and also not everything you hear in the chicken business has merit as we all know, sounds like the Ted Driskel millionaire theory has been shot down right here on SABONG. com,,,jajajaja

However Ruble was the real deal, very intelligent rooster man and you can see how he was able to reach the pinnicle of this sport at one time or another,,,,,thanks and Merry Christmas!!!!

I have over 60 plus hours of taped conversation with Red Richardson the last four years of his life. He and Billy were showing together at one time and Billy did get Hatch or right nose blueface blood as Red called it from Red. According to Red the best roosters they ever bred were half right nose blueface and half roundhead-mclean bred back to the Roundhead making them three quarters Roundhead(McLean) and one quarter right nose blueface. Red would always breed the Roundhead cock over straight-comb hens never vice-versa..... I talked personally to Billy on the phone twice before he wrecked his vehicle and was forced into the nursing home. I know the individual who got the fowl prior to Bill going into the home.... Trouble came his way with things I will not mention publically, as for the remanding fowl?????

I hope Billy Ruble is fine. He has always been very kind to me. As for Gallo Mellinton, He was a fine Man, good friend and he knew more about birds than any man I ever met. He and I went to a friends house and I told him that Gallo knew more about birds than anyone. My Friend said, heck, if he is that good, we do not need to turn on the lights to have him select thru the birds. Gallo said, I do not need to see them. I need only to feel them. We caught him birds after bird and true enough, Gallo when thru, told us the best of all the birds. My friend is an excellent cockfighter in his own right and he knew his best bird. I was trying to find out if and where I can aquire Ruble Hatch Grey's I've been told that in the days befor maybe 60's or 70's here in Hawaii my grandpa Perk they used to call him 'used to show these Hatch Greys With really good success. ALOHA N UCH MAHALO'S
I've actually seen these Ruble Hatch/Grey crosses while visiting a farm on the island of Oahu in the very early 80s. A few of 'em carried toppy.

I was talking to Bob Howard from Ohio the other day and he told me a true story he witnessed with his own eyes. Back in 60's, the big place to go was Boxwood. He was there pitside, while Billy Ruble was handling in the pit. Billy's bird had gotten knocked down early, and was off his feet for the first 20 pittings. After taking a beating, for a half hour or so, Billy's bird stood up, immediately, Harold Brown, yelled out, i will bet $100 on the Ruble, which someone took him up on. The fight went on for another hour or so, with Billy winning in the end. Back in the 60's $500 was alot of money to Bob Howard, and it left an impression about gameness he never forgot. Billy went on to win the derby, and Bob learned that there is always one tuff fight that you have to win by gameness, in a winning derby entry. Got have it. The old timers around still know it.

There's also a pit in Virginia called Little Boxwood. Could it be the same place Boxwood is Little Boxwood.

With all the interest i've seen here about Bob Boles and his fowl , i've become interested in another man from that era . Mr. Bill Ruble .

Everyone , please share what you know about Mr. Ruble and his fowl . From what I've read , he was one of the top breeders back in the 50's and 60's . I'd be interested to hear how he developed his bloodlines if anyone knows , and i'm sure alot more people would too .

Let's make this the Bill Ruble 101 tread :) I believe that our history is worth studying . These's nothing new under the sun . From learning about Bob Boles and all the interest in his methods , we also got into mtDNA . What could we learn from Bill Ruble ?

Here's my very small contribution . It's his ad in the feb. 1964 issue of The Gamecock . I think it says a whole lot about the caliber of fowl he was fighting and selling back then .
.................................................. .................................................. .

Present indications are that all of my available cocks , other than those necessary for my own requirements , will be booked for my Philippine customers . The same applies for my 1963 crop of stags .

I can still mate some brood trios headed by outstanding greenlegged Hatch cocks of McLean-Blueface bloodlines as developed by me . Some of these are cocks that I have kept for my own personal use , however , I feel sure that I won't be able to breed from them all , so am offering them for sale at this time .

If you admire beautiful , desperately game , tremendously hard hitting cocks that are bred from the choicest blood in the world , and have proved their ability in the greatest cockpits against the world's foremost cockers , you need some of this blood . I honestly don't think there are any cocks in the country that can defeat my cocks in 1 1/4 heels . In 1 1/4 heels ,

I AM OPEN TO THE WORLD !!!!
Sir, I am a beginner in this sport and i am interested with your offer to sell some of your Billy Ruble lines, I only need two pullets to start. You can contact me with my e mail add "onategary@yahoo.com" or my cp 619-962-5975 or yur contact number. thank you sir

The gameness of some greenlegs is something to behold in a drag....but most admirable are those that triumph w/o going to the drag.
