I own a family of the Showtime Spangle Kelso. I bought 2 trios plus 2 extra broodcocks from Hubert "Showtime' Ward in 2005. I have shown them straight as stags (10 months old) and as cocks. I have lost 2 out of 40+ battles. 38 win in the long gaff. Crossed over Grey, Blue, Blueface Hatch, and Red Kelso as stags and cocks maintaining a 72% win average. Not an advertisement none for sale. The name Showtime was attached to them for the way they work on a down bird. Very busy, on the verge of being to aggressive for a long battle as they fight themselves out. I dont know why anyone would say they are straight comb unless they dont know the line. They come straight and peacomb 100% yellowlegged. I have been to Huberts farm in January 2006 and his fowl are the same as mine. I have also seen his Blacks first hand and they are a very good line of Warhorse and I think they are equal to both his Red, Spangle, and White Kelso.

i acquired my trio of showtime from hubert ward and from what i remembered the original cock was a money fight winner from walter kelso; a three way cock breed from a e.h. hulsey,
welldigger, and clipper...he mated this cock to a walter kelso hen that came from walter kelso"s yard...the original showtime kelso was 1/2 kelso, e.h. hulsey, welldigger, and clipper...

Kogs you are right.Hubert and i where friends for over 50 years, his sons Bobby and Lawrence (Jerry) are good friends. The matings you mentioned was back in the fifties.Over the years Hubert breed in and out new blood when he thought he needed it ,always top kelso blood from the same line as his.He was an outstanding breeder. He told me many times that he would never send a buyer a cock that he would not breed himself.Honest to the core.

We have had the kelso since the early nineties and they are very good fowl. Kogs has the make up correct except for one small error. It was a breed called wellslinger(sp) instead of the welldiggers which is a different breed. The wellslingers were an oriental breed. Mine come 100 percent straight comb and yellow legs. I do have a line where I bred some pea comb hatch in and then bred it back down to 1/32 of the hatch. This line does throw a pea comb once in a while. Hubert is now deceased but he is not forgotten. He was a good friend and a few things he did I will never forget. He said he used to spar his hens. The kelso hens will fight each other like a cock when seperated for a while. He said he wouldnt breed a rooster that couldnt fight so why breed a hen that couldnt fight. He also said the key to keep your pure bred ones able to fight is to breed winners to sisters of winners. He was a great cocker and his sons carry on the showtime name proudly.

Does it mean that because a kelso is a white legged while the other kelso a yellow legged are two different and distinct strain? Obviously, this is deviation from the world of genetics. It is always possible and perfectly right that a 2 Chicken of different legs colors are of the same bloodline. Please review your genetics.

Search You Tube for coon kelso. He is a 7/8 inbreed to mother side, and they still fight good despite being inbreed. He's fighting against a lemon/roundhead, Lance D. lines.

I asked Mr. Hubert about the Peacomb on 2 cocks and 2 hens and the straight comb on the other 2 cocks and 2 hens and his reply to me was the peacomb adds more leg and station to the line. The straight combs were bred for a thick plummage ,power, and gameness while he bred the peacomb line towards station and reach. The same blood line just 2 seperate families bred with different long term goals. When blended each should help any shortcomings so they compliment each other. If any person wants them a line of Showtime fowl they would do better to contact
