hey guys!

recently, i went to elrode cockpit and i saw a black cock finishing his oponent in the air in one buckle. The opponent literally just dropped dead on the ground. I got facinated with this type of cock. id like to know if all blacks fight like that and what are the other black breeds.. thanks

Blacks have gained the re****tion of being sleepers and runners. Although not all blacks are like this. Some known black bloodlines are Bonanza Blacks, Black Travelers, McRaes, and Heart Surgeons. On the positive side, blacks are also known for speed. In my experience, when a good black bloodline is fought at the proper age with good conditioning, then they are just as good as any.

Canadian Mug can be considered as one of the best as long as you fight them in the proper age (3 yrs. old). They have the speed, brain and power. They cross well with any type of Hatch. You may consider Mel Sims black Mcrae. Lots of cockers from Guam like his black.

Some of the black blood of Bobby Jones came from Hawaii. They are very very fast but seem to be a very "nervous like" breed.
Wingate are also very quick.

a quote from Mr. Gery Douglas of Bonanza Gamefarm (originator of Black Bonanza)

If a red Rooster runs, not all red rooster are runners.
If a grey Rooster runs, not all grey rooster are runners.
But if a black Rooster runs, they say that all black rooster are runners.

make sense di ba ???

I got licked once by a black. I had high hopes for one of my dark wine yellow legged rooster and thought that once I get a bill hold thats it for the black. in short before pitting I already condemned my black opponenent with all the negative stuff you hear out there. I even went all the way with the bet. after the release the black just hit once and hit my rooster under the wing (nakilikili) and then just stood there without finishing until my rooster froze to death, I actually thought I had a heart attack! :) but that is that. I hope you be happy with the black!

most blacks are not runners or sulkers. on the contrary, most blacks are good. i think the only black with negative feedback is the old-time nigger breed that we had in the philippines because a number of this pure breed have sulked in the drag.

but when we talk about the other blacks (such as sid taylors, bonanza blacks, mcrae, mugs, etc). they are quick with power. in fact, i know of a few breeders who won't feel comfortable fighting a rooster which doesn't have some black blood in them.

look at jackie wilkerson's (from arkansas) fowl. all his fowl have black blood in them and they are awesome.

wow! i was amazed that there are many of us here in sabong.net who have the same admiration about black fowls....considering the bad re****tion of blacks....i dont believe. i have openly expressed my desire for dark fowls since i joined this site. i love them not because of their color..as most of my frnds conceived to be my reason...but because of what i have witnessed in the pit (i saw it in elorde also) the few blacks being fought these days...most of them i saw won unscathed. there are few sulkers or runners..but the ratio is 1/10 ... and there are lots of other sulkers and runners ... and they are not black.

I am not sure, is there a Kent and Griffin Blacks or Mugs?

We have a black but I have no clue who and how they were bred. So, I just call them Indians (like they could be Indians from all over the world who traveled across continents) and they seem to adapt to any environment and competition: Top, middle and backyard-brush. Nothing fancy about them and for sure they will never win a beauty contest, but at the end of fight day, everybody's stress is gone, everybody had a fun day and the tropa get to take home some money. A simple bird for a simple cocker.

In the late 70's my Dad bred a Mcrea cock to a Claret hen the offsprings won 21 straight fights over a period of two years before one lost. We fought them against Raymond Rayno, Oscar Atkins, Awa just to name a few. Those were the days when my Dad would read the caliskis and tell us what phase of the moon we should fight the roosters in. Us young boys used the modern keep methods String King - Naragansit and got the roosters ready and were able to win more than lose with that combination. Those were the days...BLACKS!

Gallos Locos
March 14th, 2003, 09:17 AM
TD, The Black Travelers are a late maturing line that doesn't fly too high during the break, with extremely good in-fighting ability. I've bred my Travelers to be abang , which seems uncharacteristic as blacks are thought to be rushers. Because of their late maturing nature, I wouldn't recommend this bloodline for beginners unless one has the patience to fight them at the right age. In my opinion, 2-4 years would be about right.

the very first fowls i had came from my tito and my dad's bestfriend. From my tito came a mclean broodcock, and from my dad's bestfriend came a black traveler hen. From that mating, all the produce won their first fight. Unfortunately, to date i only have one left the others died already or were stolen. The last one i have just won his second fight unscratched just last sunday. =) Gallos Locos is right, the black travelers are late maturing but fought at the right age, they're just as good as the others, maybe even better. =) The only complain i have of that line which i had, sobrang damot sa lalaki at least for me dahil siguro hen hatch ako. i always ended up with a stag every year two at most. they were madamot enough that my dad's bestfriend culled all the straight hens!! haaay... just sharing :)

Lupin,

during d ealry 80's , when my godfather and father are busy
fighting in the derby, they used a lot and had a higher percentage
of winning using this Blacks, I dont know if these are the same as your Batangas Blacks, but we called them PULO' from Pulo, Batangas; in contrary to the late maturing ones, they are best as
bullstags, fast and furious, they won a lot of them derbys around the area to Taytay,Rizal where another cumpadre operate the pit. Covelandia in Cavite was one of the best cockpit then it was
sorrounded by water run by Rey Ilas, Theresa Sq. Garden airconditioned by col de Guzman then , where Christina Enrile (Lady 44 ) comes in style via helicopter. Arcontica was run by Rudy Velayo. We had better W's with this Blacks before they switch to Bacolod folws of Hinlo, Escalona, Lacsons and Montilebano... the good old days..........

I also like Black fowls in Brownreds as they are considered Blacks.

Keep on cocking......

it doesn't really matter much to me the bloodline of the original lasak, grandfather to my bullstags which i am conditioning for hackfights.. though judging from pictures of bloodlines that i saw its features are nearer to the butcher , big head and vertical stance. got him from palit manok, relatively old and retired (imported and derby winner!?). my minor problem right now is that my gamefowls are big, difficult for neighbors to agree to a spar.

Black Shuffler cross....

This blue legged black shuffler cross defies all the misconceptions about blacks......This bird is a smart defensive fighter, traits that probably came from the hen side whose bloodline can not be ascertained. This bird does not rush the opponent, he feels his opponent out by evading him two or even three or four times before he hits back with perfectly timed shots.....(Pitik pitik lang). He is extremely fast and agile.....He has won four times without a single scratch....

This black fowl is my most favorite bird at the Sarocca Game Farm in Jacksonville, Florida. Since the bloodline on the hen side is unknown, to what bloodlines can it be bred to retain his style of fighting?

Your input will be greatly appreciated......

Arcticbird, we have not experienced them in the drag yet..He had a brother that won three times but on the fourth fight, he got cornered in the "barandilla" and was not able to evade the opponent. They either win fast and clean or lose fast too. They will probably fare better in the Philippines where the pits are bigger....

You are probably right, crossing them with a smart line like the lacy or a kelso will make them fight smart.....

Try Mclean hatch, I tried it and so far the crosses are doing great. They cross would come out fast like the blacks and powerful like the hatches. And once your cock hits the other in the first buckle you've got a big winning chance. They won't stop until the other cock is dead.

swallow
October 9th, 2003, 04:18 PM
Any game hatch blood should be good because the only doubts on blacks are their gameness, otherwise they are perfect knife fowl. Just check out the blacks you have for cutting as there are some out there that doesn't cut deep enough. I think 1/4 blood of a solid hatch line should be good enough, so as not to alter the speedy, high breaking black characteristic.

Just my opinion...

Marciel, the one that posted for opinion about what best to cross with black fowl did not specify wheather he has a cock or hen. If
the cock comes from a reliable bloodline say a MCRAE cock say 7/8 which is almost impossible to get I will breed him to a 1/2
Lacy or Bruner R.H. and 1/2 Boles Asil, the Boles asil is very hard to obtain, those that have them don't let go for selfish reason because they are very intelligent smart and very good to add to your bloodline. You can only obtain these kind of asil by being very good friend of the breeder or have someone to steal one.
I know of one from the West Coast Pinoy who paid $ 1500 for a
hen. Then inbreed the cross once, then line breed X 4 generation
cross breed after the 4th gen.so you will have a very good line with adding any other bloodline in your breeding
Sorry ans. is long, but then again breeding a raising gamefowls
should not be a hit and miss method otherwise one is wasting
time and money

Simplisit68, if you have a Mcrae cock, Wm. Mcrae does not
say much how his fowls are bred. When he was still alive he run his farm on strictly buisness., either you buy at his price or you are out. But from people close to him his black Mcrae in made-up of black traveler cross with nigger R.H. and some Doc. Robinson hatch. If there strain is correct then I will breed to a good radio from J. Jumper ( 2) to a very good pipeliner claret if you can get one, (3) Chocolate-Gray from G. Justiss. Thuis will start you with a very good strain, you can be proud off.
If you are going to breed for your own to fight or be a breeder, you have to always start with the best broodstock you can get otherwise if you fight chickens buy as many as you can afford cull 70-80% sell them and fight the remaining fowls these way you did not waste any time breeding questionable brood stocks.
I hope I ans. your question, about what to breed with your Black Mcrae. Remember Simplisty68 you either be a very good breeder or not, be less is waste of your valuable time.

Yours in breeding,
blue grass.

I went to the Hawaiian Derby this year at the Bayou Club and saw some terrific blacks fought by "Slop Jar" and Terry Henderson(I think). Any how they fought under Out Back entry, and were able to go 7-0 along with Bama(Dee Cox). If I remember correctly  Jimbo might have also had a black or two. Never the less, both entries cleaned house. :)

Sorry, I was kind of in a rush and I didn't read the entire thread, but the basis of many of these modern black fowl can be traced back to their European and Saharan Africa black fowl roots, of course, the influence of Asian black fowl has played a major roll in the formation of our modern black gamefowl as we know them today too!

Primarily:

From Spain:
White Faced Spanish Blacks
Black Minorcans
Black Castilians (first introduced by the Moors during occupation)
Black Andalucians (also known as Jerezanos)

From Sicily: (probably introduced by Arabs)
Black Leghorns

From France:
Crevecoeur Black
La Fleche Black

United Kingdom:
Old English Blacks (and black reds)

Asia:
Sumantran Black
Cubalaya Black

This is not even mentioning a many, many others that have been infused throughout the thousands of years. Imagine all the different black bantams that exist today...it will boggle your mind.

Now, you say that these are not all gamebirds, but you would be suprised what the great breeders have infused into their bloodlines throughout the past 500 years to come up with Modern Gamefowl as we know them today.

So, when somebody asks you the bloodline of your modern Warhorse.........tell them "Black Sicilian Leghorn" and check out the looks and laughter that will generate!

Sincerely,

jjrooster

Gary,

Hes a 7 times winner and thats all that matters to me as I dont suscribe to the old strains or lines that some people seem to be obcessed with. Some of these guys were legends but have been dead for 40 or 50 years and cockers still go nuts to get their lines, even though they are bound to have been watered down beyond belief.

What I think we all should be striving for is to create are own line or family of birds of which we can be proud

In my humble opinion winners breed winners and if this muff starts producing the goods, then I can inbreed, line breed or whatever round him.

use your search engine and you'll see a lot of very good information regarding black fowls and who breeds them locally. You'll be surprise that there are a lot of members here who breeds good black fowls and have fought them successfully... Sometimes it's better to go to small farms who are not too commercialize yet... rather than big farms because you'll definitely get quality fowls and are a lot cheaper as well. :)

Mel Sims breeds different strains of blacks: the blacks itself, Mugs, Brown Reds, etc. I think that he even breed an old strain of Warhorse.

His crosses with his Hatch are very respected cocks in all Mexican pits, I have seen them kicking some Sweaters, Kelsos, Radios and so on asses.

I have seen also his Greys crossed on Brown Reds and Mugs, they do not look that pretty but they fight as hell

Greetings from Mexico

We also maintain a family of Black Sid Taylors.. They no longer bear the crow black color and straight combed trait which are typical of the black sids, the breeder we got them from blended it already to compete for the long knife when we got them.. Only the hens would remain crow black most of the time. They are fast, smart and time their breaks deliberately

Here is One of our Brassback Blacks and a young 1/2 Mugg x1/2 spanish hen,I Hope to show these in the SK and Gaff, But would Imagine they could fare well in the Lk as well, they can get some air and are ACE ground fighters, from the North Briton Whitehackle in them, The Whitehackle cock that produced this black is a 4 time winner 2 in the Gaff and 2 in the LK 1st buckle every time. I also have this brassback cock bred back over his brassback mother to hopefully produce a line of these fowl. I have crossed this particular Whitehackle Cock the 4 time winner to 3 different hens and all have produced way above average fowl, fought 3 cocks of this breeding last season and all won easily. 1 cock was shown and won twice. He seems to nick on about anything I cross him to, I guess this is PREPOTENTCY in its prime. They pack power and Agility and cut fast and deadly. This is some real good black blood, these have been bred more to compete in the gaff, but one of these crossed over a good rh and you should get awesome Lk fowl, as these quills make them birds reach , the fully extend them legs and pack a lot of power behind their cut. http://www.gamefowl.com/photo/data/500/7938my_fowl_pics_083__3_.jpg

Not a lot of cockers like black cocks. Some people say that are not game and some says they are too aggressive.

I love black just because I like it, I've been breeding it and has a high winning percentage with them. I've been trying to improve the bloodline by elimination process. That means the family that doesn't suit my taste, we cull them.

I tried crossing different kind of blacks: bonanza, black traveller or the nigger roundhead, crossed them with butchers, crossed them with ruble.

So far, this is the evolution of the Black Phoenix:

result of 1st generation breeding --> black bonanza x black traveller http://www.sabong.net.ph/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=10395&papass=&sort=1&thecat=500

result of 2nd generation breeding --> 1st gen. x butcher
http://www.sabong.net.ph/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=16611&papass=&sort=1&thecat=500

http://www.sabong.net.ph/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=16614&papass=&sort=1&thecat=500

result of 3rd generation breeding --> 2nd gen. x ruble

http://www.sabong-auction.com/item.php?id=1175

Anyway, this is a pure black out of the 2nd generation which is used as a broodcock right now, I intend to have a uniform color, body conformation and fighting style out of this line -->

http://www.sabong.net.ph/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=19363&papass=&sort=1&thecat=500

However, I don't to claim its the best black until I really prove them in a big time derbies.

using blackhen over regular red cock will produce more uniform black male offsprings.........than using regular red hen with black cock....which produce mix of red and black male offsprings

BUhawi it depend also an the purity and strain of the Brood. We have a brood cock (sid) that NEVER threw off any other color other than black, be it a kelso hen , hatch or roundhead.. He's son would always bear semblance to him one way or another

I AM ONE OF THOSE COCKERS THAT LOVES BLACK BIRDS

IVE SEEN THIS BLACK BIRDS IN ACTION, MUGS THEY COME IN BLACK, RED, BROWNRED LOOKIN. BROWNREDS. SID TAYLORS. TEXAS RANGERS. BLACK BONANZA ETC...

LIKE BROWNREDS, THEY ARE FAST ACCURATE CUTTERS AND SMART BUT SOME OF THEM ARE QUITERS. YOU NEED TO LOOK FOR
THE GOOD ONE. SO AS OTHER FAMILY OF BLACKS.

BUT THIS TORNADO BLACKS, IF YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT GAMENESS, FAST AND ACCURATE, VERY SMART, AND THEY CUT IN ANY ANGLES.

IN CONLUSION, EVEN THOUGH THEY GOT GOOD RESULTS AND WINNING PERCENTAGE, STILL NATURAL TO LOSE ONCE IN A WHILE :D ATLEAST YOU SHOW 15-20 YOU LOSE 1 BUT STILL IS A GOOD WINNING PERCENTAGE.

KEEP POSTING guys.

chrisjr,

The 3rd generation, we are selling and even in auction right now, because I won't have the chance to test them myself this season. Some site members got some for the stag season. Try to bid in the auction http://www.sabong-auction.com/item.php?id=1175 , maybe you'll get at a price of a 7 month, since starting bid is only P3,500. Most of them are 10-11 months na I suppose.

About hens, we usually cull them if they don't come-up pure black. But I'll check with my brother.

ylhatch,

thanks for the comment man!

witchdoctors, brown reds, texas rangers, mcraes are some of the famous breed that was brought to the philippines in the late fifties throughout the seventies. they were fast, aggressive and
deadly in the longknife. their popularity faded when they showed
sulking and quitting during fights. this fame and popularity was reinvented in the late eighties and nineties but in different color and likeness. now, they are showing signs of sulking and quitting.
is it time to reinvent the blacks...?

Black s, There are still a few familys of blacks here in america worth looking at for international compitition lk,
true they are hard to find because the good ones , are not for sale, The black birds are solid $gold$ in Hacks against sweaters ....... they are a lot more valuable in compitition, they get the odds. There are still a hand full of men in america holding the good black Roosters. remember the original black sid taylors come from kentucky.
