LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Manny Pacquiao fought desperately with blood flowing down his face from a bad cut over his right eye. Against another fighter it may have been enough, but Erik Morales was not just another fighter.
Morales, fighting with the cool precision of a champion who has been there many times before, got the better of Pacquiao with jabs and big right hands Saturday night to win a close but unanimous decision in their 130-pound showdown
No title was at stake, but there was plenty of national pride. Pacquiao is a national hero in the Philippines while Morales is revered in Mexico, and between the two they drew a sellout crowd of 14,623 to the MGM Grand hotel to see them brawl.
They didn't disappoint, going after each other from the opening bell in a fight that grew in intensity after Pacquiao was cut in the fifth round when he was hit with a right hand and the two boxers clashed heads.
Though blood flowed in his eye, Pacquiao fought gallantly and the two fighters went toe-to-toe in a frenetic 12th round that had the crowd standing and cheering.
All three judges had Morales the winner, but not by much. He won 115-113 on the ringside scorecards, while The Associated Press had Morales ahead 116-112.
"He was a tough guy. I hit him with everything," Morales said. "I knew the guy was quick. I knew boxing would be the key because he was so fast."
It was the first fight at 130 pounds for Pacquiao, and Morales appeared to be both the bigger fighter and the bigger puncher. Pacquiao fought inside with flurries, but it was the right hand of Morales (48-2) that was the big punch in the fight.
Still, Pacquiao landed effectively with both hands himself and he kept punching and coming forward and in the 12th round seemed to be landing the bigger punches.
"It was a close fight with a lot of close rounds," Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach said. "Morales landed the bigger punches but Manny landed more combinations."
Pacquiao blamed the loss on having to wear a different type of gloves than he usually uses. He wore them because his promoter, Murad Muhammad, signed a deal for his fighter to wear them.
Neither fighter went down, but it wasn't because of a lack of effort. They brawled at a relentless pace that brought back memories of Morales' three fights with Marco Antonio Barrera.
"I tried my best," Pacquiao said.
Morales kept his left jab on the cut over Pacquiao's eye, but said he didn't think the fight would be stopped.
"I wasn't focused on them stopping the fight," he said. "I wanted to punish him."
Pacquiao came into the ring as a slight favorite and wasted no time in going after Morales, who is generally a slow starter. But Morales fought back with right hands midway through the round, gesturing to Pacquiao as if the fight had just begun.
Morales was getting the better of Pacquiao with hard right hands in the early rounds, but Pacquiao landed good combinations of his own and the fight went back and forth with good ebb and flow.
Pacquiao (39-3-2) came into the ring with the weight of his country on his slight shoulders. Some 30 million people in the Philippines were expected to watch the fight on live television, and the husband of the country's president and many members of its congress traveled to Las Vegas for the fight.
The fight was more intriguing because of the common opponent the two boxers faced. Morales beat Barrera once and lost two close decisions to him, while Pacquiao stopped Barrera in the 11th round of their 2003 fight.
Morales had far more experience in title fights, winning 18 of 20, and held titles in three different weight classes. Pacquiao, meanwhile, was moving up to 130 pounds after a career that began at 106 pounds.
In another title fight on the card, Martin Castillo of Mexico retained his WBA 115-pound title with a unanimous decision over Eric Morel (35-2) of Puerto Rico. Castillo (28-1) won 119-109 on all three ringside scorecards in his second title defense.

It was very obvious, in the first 2 rounds Morales was writhing everytime Manny was hitting him with body shots but he did not adequately follow up everytime he lands solid punches to Morales making Morales recover and counterattack solidly. I have seen Manny fight but I have not seen him fight that way, no follow up.
He is not afraid of Morales punches, so what happened? Why the sudden change in style of fighting?
Rematch?? Baka posporo na lang ang ibigay nila kay Manny.By the time this Boxing organization will give Manny the opportunity to fight again at this level of money fight, he will be 35 years old, granting Manny could still be able to win small time fights up to that age.
Everybody knows how crooked this Boxing system is.

Morales was barely given any media exposure. Reason???

The Numbers: Morales-Pacquiao!

By Bob Canobbio

ERIK MORALES W12 MANNY PACQUIAO

The fight was billed “Coming With Everything” - “Leaving It All In The Ring” should be added to that promotional phrase after 12 exciting rounds Saturday night that kept Morales’ Mexican fans and Pacquiao’s Phillipine faithfuls on their feet all night long.

The fight featured sizzling exchanges in every round, but the fight was controlled by the bigger, more experienced Morales, who used his jab to neutralize Pac Man’s advances. It was an amazing display of boxing skill considering the jab from an orthodox fighter is not usually an effective punch vs. a southpaw-especially one as skilled as Pacquiao. Morales, with a the heart of a lion and a chin of granite, is that talented a “fighter”-not just a crowd-pleasing brawler-although he does that pretty darn good as well.

As expected, Pacquiao came out fast, throwing 83 total punches and landing 18 of 43 (42%) power shots, hurting Morales to the body midway through the round. Pac Man won the round on all 3 cards. Morales began to find the range with his jab in the second and proceeded to outland Pacquiao 16-9 in total punches-winning the second frame on all 3 cards. Pacquiao had a 19-12 edge in round three-enough to win that round-although Morales did land 11 of 33 jabs.

Morales outlanded Pacquiao 120-82 over the next five rounds, winning 4 of those 5 on the judges cards. The edge was bolstered by Morales’ ability to consistently land his jab-which not only scored points, but blunted Pac Man’s attack.

With blood streaming down his face from a badly-cut right eye, Pac Man rallied to win round 9-outlanding Morales 22-15, including 17-11 in power shots, He now trailed by just one point on all 3 cards with 3 rounds remaining.

Morales had a big round 10-landing 29 total punches (his high total for the fight) to 16 for Pac Man. Morales swept the round on the cards. Round 11 was closer, as Pacquiao was busier, throwing 87 total punches. Morales had a slim 20-19 edge in connects and won the round-pulling ahead by 3 points on all cards.

Pacquiao, sensing he needed a knockout to win the fight (he was right), came out blazing in the 12th. Morales, who in his words wanted to “add some flavor” to his performance, inexplicably turned southpaw-not only was Morales daring Pacquiao to take his best shot, but he was also telling Pac Man he was going to close out the show by not by protecting his lead, but by beating him at his own game. It was a tremendous give and take rounds that left Morales legs like jelly-more from fatigue than from Pac Man’s punches, although Manny did land 31 of 99 attempts (his high output for the fight) to 25 of 69 for Morales. Pacquiao won the 12th on all cards. Not enough, as the all 3 judges voted 115-113 Morales.

The final stats showed Morales landing 265 of 714 (37%) total punches to 217 of 894 (24%) for Pacquiao, who had a 183-169 edge in power connects (non-jabs), throwing 545 to 411 for Morales. Morales did land 41% of his power shots, rocking Pacquiao on several occasions. Morales’ jab, the difference in the fight, landed 96 of 303 times (32%) to 34 of 349 (10%) for Pacquiao.

Once again, Morales, nearly a 2-1 underdog in some books (Pac Man fans bet with their hearts), proved why he may be the top pound for pound fighter in the business today-he’s never in a bad fight and gives all he has everytime he laces up the gloves. Ditto for Pacquiao, and speaking of gloves, he and his trainer Freddy Roach blamed the use of the Japanese-manufactured “Winning” gloves as partly top blame for Pac Man’s demise. They preferred Mexican-manufactured “Reyes” gloves-more of a puncher’s glove, however Pacquiao’s promoter Murad Muhammad, who has been at odds with Roach over other issues as well, signed the contract for the fight that stipulated the use of the “Winning” gloves. Advantage Morales and Top Rank.

i read on a boxing forum that the fight was bought. What you guys think? HAve you guys heard this issue? Sabi daw nila, manny wasnt boxing the way he boxes. As compared to the barerra fight he was totally the opoosite against Morales. With regards to the blood tests, gloves and head butt issues i think it may be a possibility. But I cant acept the fact that MAnny will sell out on his countrymen! What you guys think?

....
we all know that the only way paquiao could win was to KO morales... there was no way he can win through the judges score cards... bob arum is just way beyond the league of murad... but we should give credit to morales for moving well... he really put up a good fight... too bad manny was cut... it would have been a lot different if both his eyes could see...
