Elmer Griffin is the man they take their name after, He and his other 2 brothers were the only ones to give back the cocks they were walking for Madigin when he died, The ones I knew were fast, whitelegged, tall, lemon hackled, high-breaking and of course a
    pure Claret is always straightcomb.

In my opinion Clarets are the best. They cross well with just about everything. I raise about 50-100 every year. And yes they should only come in straight comb with white legs.

Ohhhh man the one that got away...... I was in Alabama a looooong time ago talking to one of Elmers Kin and he said that - Madigin would walk one of his stags at Elmers place every year and Elmer would breed them to his Shawlnecks (whitehackle) and would retain the ones bred to the Madigins and would breed them back to the new Claret that the colonel would bring after he took the one he left the year before. The Colonel never gave Elmer a hen despite his request.

I was offered them but refused as I did not have room in the car.....Still Kickin myself....I still remember the place and the birds, I hope after 2 decades he is still there!
