I bought some of these Hatches as cockerels, quite distinct from the other hatches in form but nonetheless as game, as I have heard. My dad was really happy with them and they can withstand tough range conditions..well,at least from our experience.

Very early maturing, 6-7 months and already showed potential.
Sparred once- , good breaking though not really as high, strong wings and agile on flight, multiple shufflers on the ground, rarely billholds ..so agressive ("eager" for battle)

second spar(2-4wks apart) less agressive and showed a bit of restraint and somehow develop a sense of timing, still breaks not as high but all that is needed really... and surprising for a staG...POWER!! knocks the age cock off its balance(yes i reviewed the disc frame by frame )It has just kicked in and boy..they have it in them..you cant train a stag to release tremendous power -they have to be born with it..or when they have gone mad in your keep...hehe..like a stag on steriods!!hehe

3/4 of all the stocks showed uniformity..the rest might be better off tested as cocks...or be given to friends and relatives..if they would have it of course.

They will be tested as stags this October...all we can do now is keep them healthy and far from the tempted..hehehe..and hopefully they perform well.

I am not sure if I heard it correctly from a friend but he bought some from ?Rocky Top..am not perfectly sure if that what it is called. I'll asked him about it next time..I recalled he said Gavilans for the most part were mainly showned for the Short knife...oh well that may explain the inate power.
but then again I can only speculate...

    cheerio!!

    Re: Gavilan Hatch

We have done very well w/ this line ever since i acquired them 5 years ago...That's the time when Johnny Stansell won a double Champ in a 6 cock derby w/ a score of 12-0 and another Champ w/ a 6-1 score...
I did'nt expect that our farm from that time on will be known more because of this Gavilan Hatch...But, until now they just keep on winning in high % for us...
We scored 6W-2L at the Bakbakan '03 as first timer, We won a 5 & a 6 cock derby just a month ago using half Gavilans, and alot of insurances in 4, 5 & 6 cock derbies...
All i can say is this bloodline can really hold their own, they can add solid bottom, gameness to the core, they have smartness as a hatch and they can break too if you know how to point them...
You can visit my gallery, i got some pix there pure and crosses...

    Hope this Helps...

Yes, looks like i got mine from Johnny over in Texas. I have had them for quite some time now but havent really done much with them. I will be testing some of the offspring (as 3year old cockes) this November. Hopefully i can rack up some W's. Thank you all for your response.

    Re: Gavilan Hatch

Got my Gavilan Hatch Brood Stock from Johnny Stansel in Mid-2004. He was nice enough to let me select from his tie cord area. Although he never bragged while I was there, the numerous trophies I saw in his cockhouse is testament of his success in the pit.

The birds are not high vertical flyers that soar above their opponent. They fly more at an angle straight toward the opponent and more often than not, strike first. They are agile and smart fighters on the ground. They are multiple calculating shufflers, accurate and good cutters. Power? 8 month old stags hit like cocks. And as someone stated about the Gavilans, they rarely grab hold of their opponents. Basically, they stick and move.

There were four groups of Filipino cocker friends that tested them for me this year on the Island of Saipan. All with varying degree of conditioning skills. They fought both stags and bull stags against cocks. They had a high percentage of wins. We also found out that in addition to the earlier description of their fighting style, they are very game and win quickly - most won in less than a minute. Then again we have an excellent Filipino Knife-Man.

Johnny's birds do not come cheap but they are well worth the money. I will be shipping Gavilans to be fought in Guam's (my real home) biggest derby in November. They will be fought by a Filipino cocker. I'm sure they will do well if conditioned properly.

If you know someone from Saipan, local or Filipino cocker, ask about the Gavilans and who breeds them.

    Re: Gavilan Hatch

We have fought only straight dark leg Gavilans so far, no crosses. I have crossed a Perry Hatch cock with several Gavilan hens - strictly for battlecocks. We'll see how they will perform before the end of this upcoming season.

I am presently returning from visiting my cocking friends in Texas whom, I personally select brood stock from. One of them breeds Albany cocks over Gavilan hens and has been very successful with them. He tried putting a Gavilan cock over Albany hens but says that the Albany over Gavilan is best.
