Canker can develop after a cut or sore on the mouth (inside beak) or can also result after a 'peck fight". The infected chicken will have foul-smelling liquid drooling from the mouth, watery discharges from the eye is noticeable and will lose weight rapidly. Canker deep in their throat can obstruct the upper digestive passage and would result to suffocation. The cut or sore would allow the protozoa to multiply causing a cheese-like button or sometimes would look like a cauliflower. The protozoa is found in stagnant water, spoiled feed, moldy litter associated with unsanitary conditions. Treatment is still possible if the lesion is just starting to grow. If canker is a problem on your yard, it is best for you to start a prevention program. Put Copper Sulfate in all the water bowls. Only a “pinch” in a gallon of water. Copper Sulfate keeps their drinking water free from algae, molds and protozoa.

    TREATMENT:
Give Flagyl tablet once a day for 10 days.

Clean their beak, upper tract down to their throat with “Bactidol” or Betadine Oral Antiseptic.
