Another cockpit up in Iloilo City

THE City Council unanimously approved on Friday a franchise to put up the second modern cockpit arena at Mandurriao district to rival the existing Iloilo Coliseum in Jaro.
Businesswoman Marjorie Maranon will put up the second cockpit that will virtually close the door for other prospective applicants to put up a high-end cockpit in the city.
As provided in Presidential Decree (PD) 1320 as amended, it allows only two legalized cockpit in a local government unit (LGU).
Proposed by City Councilor Lyndon Acap, the Mandurriao cockpit will be solely owned by Maranon in a 3,000 land area along Q. Abeto St., Mandurriao.
The City Council approved the Acap resolution during its regular session after several postponements and further study of the proposal.
Maranon will have a five-year franchise after showing compliance of all requirements for a cockpit operation in Mandurriao.
Acap said the cockpit is located in a reasonable distance from the church and schools. It also has its own access roads and parking spaces.
Iloilo City can also impose amusement tax from the cockpit operation.
Cockfighting remains a favorite past time of the Ilonggos. Big cockfight tournaments costing millions of pesos on bets are usually held at the Iloilo Coliseum especially during the Jaro fiesta on first week of February every year.
