    Sharpening Machine

Years ago I was given a homemade sharpening machine. The motor seems to be wearing out. Instead of replacing the motor, I would like to seek the members advice on the best and most reasonably priced sharpening machines that are available. Can anyone with experience in tari sharpening provide information as to brand names, model etc of a sharpening machine available? Appreciate all your help and responses.

use a regular bench grinder...on one side is a rubber wheel and on the other a buffing wheel.

I have used many different sharpening methods and would recommend that you get a mandrel, a belt and a 1725 RPM motor. Heat is your enemy and most people do not have the touch to deal with a 3450 rpm motor\grinder when sharpening. Another thing ,the high speed i an aggressive wheel almost always grind down too much metal. If you knives are of good steel and they are only cutting flesh, there is no need to work or grind the metal but only to hone and polish to a razors edge that will not fold.

    Re: Sharpening Machine

I know this thread is pretty old but I would like to share some info. I make the Sharpshooter Sharpener. While it is far from "automatic" the sharpening wheel does run very slow and in water. This makes it hard to screw up your knives and gaffs.
Important things to look for when choosing a machine; It cools while sharpening, the sharpening surface is not flat, but slightly rounded. The polish wheel should be soft cloth for gaffs (so it can get into everywhere and not leave flats) for knives, it is the opposite. You want a hard or firm wheel to help retain the shape of the knife (and not try to grab it out of your hand) The Sharpshooter also comes with a DVD video to help you. I'm not trying to do a commercial, I just hope this helps. I have been sharpening these tools for nearly 30 years. Thanks

This little machine gets them scary sharp.

    It uses a convex grind

There is a learning curve but very easy to master. Can be plugged into a car ighter with an inverter.
A machine like this can pay for itself 10 times over real quick.
    Called the Work Sharp.

Thanks for sharing sir. Is it OK if I ask you where I can buy it? I am most probably in a different country from yours so maybe I can order it online if you can give me further details of your sharpening tool. Am very interested about it sir, thanks in advance!

I never have tried it with the LK but would imagine it would be a little easier than a SK.
There is a learning curve but I got things scary sharp within days of owning one of these machines.

They have an updated version of this machine called the Ken Onion edition with variable speeds and some cool features. I prolly will get on of them in the future but this basic model works like a champ.

Trimming spurs has never been easier with this machine using the green belt that it comes with for grinding down sharp spurs.
Every knife and pair of scissors have never been sharper in my home.
I made over $100 at the Mexican dance the first time I brought it with me along with a power inverter that plugs into the cigarette lighter outlet in my truck. It's a big hit...... I'll get asked about if I don't show up.... People bring them by the dozens for me to touch up. This little machine has paid for itself 10x over.
