Spraddle Legged or Splay Legged Cock?

What causes a cock to suddenly come down with spraddle/splay legs?
I also noticed my last batch of chicks in the incubator had to be destroyed due to this.
Is it a viral or bacterial infection... and in the case of the old brood cock, can it be cured?

thanks in advance for your time

If you hen hatch the same eggs are the off sping splay legged? If so blame it on the parents if not blame it on the incubator. Incorrect incubating temps can cause defects. In my experience.

spraddle leg is caused by viral arthitis , ruble had the leipers that would spraddle on strings and under certain stress conditions also have seen crosses do the same you can vaccinate for it ,

i agree with 808, it probably is mareks disease if the birds have not reached 8 months, but if older then it could be a case of high acidity like uric that goes to their ligaments and bones

Chickens infected with VIRAL ARTHRITIS are observed as swellings of digital flexor and metatarsal extensor tendons.Swellings of the foot pad and elbow joint (hock) with marked edema of the tarsal and metatarsal tendon sheaths. These erosions enlarge, coalesce, and extend into underlying bone.

As to the occurence of splay legs, i suspect that it is a case of PEROSIS or slipped tendon and is caused mainly by a deficiency of manganese, but it can also be inherited. To be sure, feed a supplement which is high in manganese, biotin and pantothenic acid for a month or so and see if the condition improves.
Chronic cases seen often on old broodcocks usually becomes a permanent disability.
