Have you thought of buying used motor from discarded washing machine, dish washer or refrigeratorr? A lot of this stuff just get thrown on the wayside every trash day and somebody picks them up and take out the motor. You can get the recyled motor for less than twenty bucks. Just buy the other stuff you need to get the thing working like the mandrel, pulley, fan belt, and grinding stone from the hardware store. Sometimes its just better to do your own and modify what is out there to suit your purpose. Flea market is also where you see all these stuff or go to an estate sale. Found one Sears motor at an estate sale for only 10 dollars and it's one of those heavy duty motor, and all I added was the arbor and grinding stone.

theres a knife holder and also thats why you want a low speed so it doesnt grind down the knife and you get more control on sharpening the knife as i say if my garnd-pa dats 80 yrs old can do it and not get cut up then i can do it ...

    Re: knife sharpening machine

Outlaw, good price for $3.00. Over here that is the cheapest price you will find but not the best edge. The rest are $6.00, $7.00, $10.00 and $12.00 for each knife. One stated he makes around 7g's each season.

Here is the problem though, some folks put some funny stuff on their blades, then when it goes to the man, the funny stuff goes on the stone. Then poor unsuspecting folks send theirs and also get the funny stuff on their knives from the stone. When used they get blamed for the funny stuff and now has a bad rep. Seen this happening since early this season after some folks came back from their vacation. The sticking of Lemon also increases the toxicity.

Sharpening is the easy part, the buffing/polishing is the hard part where as you stated, one may loose some fingers. I remember trying it and that big boy flew all the way across the room and went through the wallboard. I usually hone mine and only the most needed ones go to the man.

Yeah I Know About The Knife Holders But Still I Rather Him Do Em.
Wassup Mudflop Yeah $3 Bucks Is A Good Deal And He Makes Em Nice! I Think Half The Island Goes To Waimanalo To Get Theirs Sharpened From Him And Plus He Dont Grind The Blade Like Those Other Guys. I Was Asking Him How Much He Made Last Season And He Said Around $15,00! Imagine How Many Knives That Is. That Short Bolohead Guy Can Sharpen! Yeah he told me about sometimes while buffing, it bit the blade and the knife went into the wall!

    Re: knife sharpening machine

I know this thread is old but maybe some newbys to this site (like me) can use the info. This is a very good machine......for sharpening chisels. The flat surface does not lend itself to conforming to our knives which have a sort of "hawkbill" curve to them. The finish, or polishing wheel is also very important.

I know this thread is pretty old but I would like to share some info. I make the Sharpshooter Sharpener. While it is far from "automatic" the sharpening wheel does run very slow and in water. This makes it hard to screw up your knives and gaffs.
Important things to look for when choosing a machine; It cools while sharpening, the sharpening surface is not flat, but slightly rounded. The polish wheel should be soft cloth for gaffs (so it can get into everywhere and not leave flats) for knives, it is the opposite. You want a hard or firm wheel to help retain the shape of the knife (and not try to grab it out of your hand)
ANY machine can be dangerous if you don't pay attention but my video is designed to show you correct and SAFE methods.
I'm not trying to do a commercial, I just hope this helps. I have been sharpening our style of knives and selling these tools for nearly 30 years. Thanks
