Re: John O. Fowler outn out kelso??

I read an article in a mid-70's Gamecock written by the man himself. He said there were two sides to the family. The originals were yellow legged and they were heavy in Judge Wilkins Typewriter Blue, if you pushed back the saddle feathers you could see the bluish tinge in the feathers and this was the way to tell the authentic ones. He said these yellow legged ones had lots of snap and Kelso would use these for his stag mains and they were tough to beat. Later on Butcher blood was infused and they started to get whitelegged ones and these were what they used as cocks.

I think Jimmy East got his Kelso from J.O. Fowler. His grandson Ty Kennedy still breeds them.

WE had the Fowler Kelsos back in the late seventees to the eightees. Iking (Araneta) imported some and we bought one from him. We had the YL ones and we bred these to our ruble greys and the pullets were later bred to a Jimmy East hatch. The results were very good. They won the majority of their fights.

Tonio, I know your dad Mike and he might have seen these birds. We fought under the Mariko Farm entry during those days. Mang Esting Teopaco also saw them.

The fowler YL Kelsos that we got was an UGLY bird. The first time I saw it, I told my friend not to breed him because he does resemble a gae rooster. He was a very good producer though, and the pullets that we got from him were even better producers. Iking later borrown that particular rooster back but he died in his yard. Those were the days. I wish I was still there fighting birds everyday. Now all I do is work on my desk, come home, sleep and do it all over again. Until a couple of yrs ago we could still go south and find a LK pit. They have since closed shop.

Back in the late 70"S, I had the chance to fight some of these cocks (direct from JOF)and I saw a bunch of them fought. They were straight comb, yellow leg, med station cocks. They were medium breakers, feet out front, good cutting cocks. They were much stronger and well built than most of the kelsos i see today. But they were bred for the gaff in those days. They were even better when crossed on jof's butcher. I knew some guys who had never won a derby get hold of some of these and won coy.

If your post was meant for me, no I do not have them anymore. I am now in the U.S. (east coast, Short heel country). I have a farm in the Phil., but I do not have the Fowlers that came directly from John O. If you want to get some here in the U.S., Sonny Poe of Alabama has them. I tried his fowl and had some success. They just did not nick with the birds that I have now.

Re: John O. Fowler outn out kelso??

    kog,

you got some from BluffCreek, didn't you? do you still have them? are they light red, yl and sc? more of bottom fowls or ability fowls?

acorncreek in GR claims Jimmy Carter (yes, the ex US prez) bred an O'fowler blackbreasted red, yl, sc cock to the clarets he inheritted from his father-in-law and won several derbies before he went into politics... acorn inheritted some from "uncle Jimmy" (as he calls him), and calls them Carter clarets...
