Best Battles Cross and Worse Battle Cross

I would like to see from your experiences, what crosses worked and what crosses didnt work.
There are so much different varieties of bloodlines and some just nicks with each other and
some just doesnt nick at all. Please provide your knowledge on what is a good cross and what was a bad cross.

So far, i have seen some common crosses that nicks well.
    Those are as follows:
    Perry Hatch x Kelso
    Yellow Leg Hatch x Roundhead
Dan Grey Roundhead x Dee Cox Sweater
Mel Simms Black Mcrae x Mel Simms Hatch

    Bad Crosses:
not sure what was bad, but most likely those that produced dunghills.
Hope this area can be filled in.

Think more about what each family of fowl does good as opposed to the name of the fowl. It will help you to keep track of what you EXPECT the offspring to do. Its important to have a mental image of how you expect them to perform. If they don't meet your expectations of performance(not just winning), you could adjust your breeding program.
You don't just want to produce winners. You want high percentage of winners. You don't want 1 ace for every 10 cocks produced.

Re: Best Battles Cross and Worse Battle Cross

Hard to say what is the best as everyone has different preferences and fighting conditions, a hatch cross is usually safe but you should pay close attention to the individuals you are breeding. Just because you are successful with a pen of Hatch-Kelsos does not mean pairing any of your hatch birds to any of your kelsos would produce winners.

I general though I say Hatch crosses are usaully the best/dependable...

WOrse cross? I don't know Pumpkin X Henny X Muff X Bantam, but hey you never know..

If I had one ace for every Ten cocks produced then I'd be breeding as many of those as possible... But then again maybe our definition of an ace is a little different.

Re: Best Battles Cross and Worse Battle Cross

The best cross I find is 1 from a mating where the Male is a Clean Multi winner and the hen is from a family where all her Brothers are Multiwinners.

Worst I have seen is from a rooster who was not tested in the pit and a pullet was used because of her so called Bloodline.

    Just my observations
    Cheers

    Che'lu, here's my experience.
    Good Crosses:
Kelso Cock x Hatch-Perkins Roundhead (Inbred) hen that nick.
Roundhead x Hatch-Perkins Roundhead hen that nick.
Roundhead x Hatch-Perkins Roundhead (Inbred) hen that nick.

    Bad Crosses:
    Perkins-Roundhead x Hatch hen (CA)
    Kelso x Hatch hen (CA)
    Hatch x Claret hen (WA)

My bad crosses I called the "Wassa Madah" hybrid, because there's somethings wrong with them besides the "Wassa Madah"?

bad cross? white leghorn cock to any gamefowl hen...lol... my uncle loves to raised gamefowl chickens (all were just gifted to him) as a hobby, he never fights his stocks, but once in a while, people/friends bought his chickens and fight them in hacks...some he gave them away, some win some lose...he doesn't know anything about bloodlines, all his chickens were hen hatched, hen raised, and run loose in the range, till' it's time to pen them up...so as the hens are loose...they can choose which cock to father their chicks...he only raises reds, blacks, & greys...for more than 10 years...there was a batch of white chicks that came out...i was so curious and asked him how come there was a batch of whites that came up...first, i thought it could be a throwback due to too much inbreeding...damn wrong, coz' i also have another uncle that raised local domestic gamecocks (tagalog) in the same place and at the same time had a white leghorn on cord...this was the culprit...the white chicks really grow fast and healthy, disease resistant...but they all end up in the pot...lol....i should have save one and find out later how it will fight against a real game bird...if it will run to the nearest highway...hehehe...or might stand on his ground coz' her mother is a good hen...who knows...

Re: Best Battles Cross and Worse Battle Cross

    I like...
    Doc cock over sweater
    Leiper over sweater
    Clement grey over sweater
    Clement grey over leiper

I must add...those are my favorite 1/2 and 1/2 crosses...I prefer to take them back one way or the other 3/4 and 1/4. I get a little more consistency that way. I'll do that both ways after a breeding.

Re: Best Battles Cross and Worse Battle Cross

Hatch/Jarret Rh ... I had three brothers that won as baby stags and as cocks . Two of the brothers won 5 fights each and the last one ended up a 14 time winner .

Lacy/Boston ... same thing , I had three of em' and they won from 4-6 fights each.

Hatch/Whitehackle-Salbury Rh ... had about a dozen of these and they were powerhouses that could cut . The best one I fought naked heel against a heeled up cock and won ... they could hurt another cock bad.

Pumpkin / Hatch-Pumpkin ... raised 8 of these and won 4 derbies with them .

Worst : Hatch/Kelso ... had about 20 that were beautiful and sparred great but couldn't win a fight , if they even got close to winning then they'd run ,lol.

Re: Best Battles Cross and Worse Battle Cross

Common good crosses I've heard or seen are:

    sweater/hatch

    sweater/radio

    ylh/sweater

    claret/roundhead

    albany/grey

    asil/sweater

    black/hatch

    hatch/kelso

    ylh/hatch

    Albany/ylh

    hatch/grey

    kelso/sweater

But again it all depends on certain families of those bloodlines you have, some will nick better than others and also how you deal with them as far as maintenance, keep........ Healthy chickens is a must the rest is up to you

I will add...the worst cross I ever saw was some blacks (not sure on where they came from) and clarets....could not fight!!! Looked and acted good...but they weren't in a beauty pageant haha. Both families could fight on there own and crossed to other stuff..but not together!! These weren't mine btw....but a friend's....needless to say that whole family of crosses is no longer with us.

Re: Best Battles Cross and Worse Battle Cross

Hatch x Kelso, joe goode grey x kelso, hatch x goode grey, hatch x goode x kelso. Albany x roundhead. These have been good. Back in the 70s my late dad crossed some warhhorse to the hatch that was hell on wheels for bout 5 years but lost the original warhorse hens and it was never the same. The worst i ever dealt with was some whitehackle hatch crosses that were some beautiful cocks but thru out the year i fought them at the ole browns pit in sarepta la and the rodeo arena pit in dubberly la.. fought about 30 of them and maybe 7 or 8 won. Terrible cross for me. One of the best cross i ever seen someone else bred and fight was a hatch shuffler cross that was bred by Jack Coe and Donnie Bobo from lewisville ar fight . For about 3yrs these cocks where as good as any ive ever seen, they was hell. I never seen roosters that shuffled like these and they was cutn. They fought them mostly in gaff derbies this cross didnt lose many and by the way did i say they was hell.

Good crosses were Albany/Asil 50/50, sweater/Asil, spangled hatch/gull whitehackle and Claret/Albany. My straight Clarets are better I think pure than crosses but not very big pure!

Dunghill to dunghill, gets my vote also. It really ain't fair to give some of these fine names a bad rap, when it was just a dunghill to start with. Great hens, good broodcock works. Any dunghill blood should show up. All my bad crosses are gone. I am a little slow sometime, but after a couple of bad breedings, off with their heads. It didn't matter if it was a Hatch or what ever.

Best cross. 3/4 RH 1/4 Hatch. All weapons. (when legal) ----- Worst 1/2 McLean 1/2 Butcher. Couldn't get out of their own way. Should have had targets on them. Crossed RH on Albany 1/2 & 1/2. For 3 pitting they were fantastic. After that they started ducking real bad. Cost me 2 derbies in Arizona. Both money fights. Came from the Albany side.

Worst LK cross is Black x Grey. I saw one lose in less than 10 seconds. Slow and aggressive is not a good combination for the LK. That's why you don't see a lot of them. Although, I do like their color.

i have some black x greys ( dirty greys ) or (hiraw) that do well in LK, watched one win in fastest kill 8 seconds.. raised em the right way and good selection process. just my opinion

One of the best crosses I had back in the 80's was 1/2 Claret 1/2 Spanish. I had both line of Madigin Clarets - the dark wine, white legged, with black spurs, and the white Clarets; the only difference between the crosses was their color. I showed them with Aluminum Spurs and Gaff from 1-1/4" to 1-15/16" and they consistently won over 80%. I preferred the Claret cock over Spanish hens.

Their are plenty black greys that are good in long knife. Maybe the ones youve dealt with just didnt nick. Most of the good blackgreys i have seen have been anything but slow. Just my opinion!
