The black blood that went into them was actually imported by Gallo Milton in the 50's from Yancey Harris. This was one of the first importation of gamefowls from the US after the advent of the commercial air travel. The Harris black blood was crossed to the Batangas Balulangs to create the "malaking pulo" hybrids. They won they fair share in the pits but with the massive importation of the "Texas" strains in the sixties they were simply outgamed.

    Re: Malaking pulo blacks

The Yancey Harris black tasseled stain was deep game, as was the case with many old Warhorse-type strains. The Balulangs were known to be cold, running screaming and going under the hack when cut; although they were great cutters.

The "malaking pulo" was one of the first oriental grades and many lessons could be learned from it. First, straight comb western black blood nick with orientals. Bobby Boles crossed his old black western blood that was also of the warhorse-type (Irish Fardowns) with Japs and Asils and produced outstanding battle cocks that were great cutters and game. Second, if one is to venture into oriental grading, he better make darn sure that the oriental side is deep game. The Balulangs were not game, but when the Harris blood was added they gameness was improved to a certain degree due to the additive action of genes.

And so when the battle got into the drag, the malaking pulo with improved gameness than the straight Balulang due to the infusion of the western black blood would not run screaming as the straight Balulangs would, but would rather SULK, that is, stop fighting/moving and play dead. The locals regard this sulking as "natutulog."

In oriental grading, it is important to stress that cutting AND gameness should be present in both western and oriental families, due to the additive action of genes. Cutting AND gameness are much too important to get lost in the mix if either trait is not present in one of the families being crossed. Also, a solid black western blood is a good choice due to the added speed in the mix as they have been proven to nick with good japs and asils.

Hope this helps. Harinaway ipagpaumanhin nyo kung ingles ang post ko sapagkat mas madali at mabilis para sa akin gamitin ang wikang ito sa pagpapaliwanag. Salamat.

    Re: Malaking pulo blacks

If you give me a trio of Balulangs and a hundred or so years I could make them deep game as game as any whitehackle or hatch strain thru selective breeding, without infusing western blood! I would only need one tool -- the 1-1/4" peg awl. Each generation of stags I would purge with this weapon and select only the one stag that could take it the most to breed for the next generation of stags; then repeat this method of selection for a hundred generation of this family. In the end I would have isolated the the very unique genes that make chickens game. This was how the true gamefowl that we know of today were developed for hundred of years in old England and later in the US NE where the choice of weapon used in competition was the peg awl or the short heels.

    Re: Malaking pulo blacks

My point being is it's unfortunate that Filipinos - with equal or more passion in gamefowl as their English and American counterparts from the other side of the world - were not able to develop their own strain of true game fowl and have to rely on their western friends in sport for brood stocks. The main culprit is their choice of weapon - the long knife. You can never purge your stocks for gameness using the long knife as a tool. For the l/k is too lethal. The more lethal the weapon that you strap onto a chicken's leg the more you increase the element of chance, and diminish the test of gameness and other skills coming into play. Most l/k fights last only a few buckles or under a minute or two, and when it does go on to the distance and gameness comes into play the winning cock is too severely injured to survive for the brood pens. It's the so called aces that dispatch their opponents quickly with cutting accuracy and multiple winners almost unscratched that are retired to the brood pens - this vicious circle went on from backyard to big farm breeders. There is no doubt as to the cutting and winning ability of these aces, but what about gameness? Meanwhile, on the other side of the planet, the old English and later the Americans were competing in the short heels where gameness aside from cutting is being tested first and foremost, thus came about the gamest strain of chickens on the planet -- the Knowsleys, North Britons, Whitehackles, Brown Reds, Boston Roundheads and their latter derivatives such as the Gulls, Hatches, Butchers, Albanies, Clarets, Kelsos, etc. Of course the gene pool of these strains came from the same source as that of the Filipinos' Balulangs in the early times - from the mediocre jungle fowls of Asia.

    Re: Malaking pulo blacks

Gameness is quantitative and an extra-ordinary trait. It has to be selected from individuals that possess it the most if we are to develop and maintain a family. And we as breeders are constantly dealing with this natural phenomenon known as the "drag of the breed" or the doctrine of retrogression, that is, the propensity of a strain with extra-ordinary traits to breed back towards mediocrity if the extra-ordinary traits are not carefully selected generation after generation. What took five hundred years to develop would only take five years to ruin.

As the current torch bearers of the sport, having been prohibited in the UK and the US, we owe it to our forefathers in the sport who passed on these magnificent strains to our generation, and to the future generation, to preserve if not improve the GAME fowl, for gameness is the very foundation of our sport, regardless of weapon we show. I think every responsible breeder, regardless of the weapon he competes, ought to have two sets of 1-1/4" peg awls in their yard, and purge their stocks every three years for gameness. For they may come a time that you may not have your western friends in sport being able to do it for you and supply you with gamefowl every three years of retrogression in your possession.

About 90 percent sure ako eto na nga pulo ang bloodline my grandfather told me before he died..he call them itom 'illonggo kase' he got a pair mid 70's or 80's sa batangas when he was assigned there to work.. then breed them up to 90's.. until he stop nung nagsimula na syang mag imports then sinama nalang sa mga hatchers ang mga hen at parang ginawa native or kakatayin ang family... until nakita ng uncle ko mga ito na malakas pumalo pwede sa patakbuhan. he breed this to his fowl until he stopped breeding it... when i went to my uncles place 3 years ago nakakuha ako ng black hen from him.. eto na yung bloodline na yun that he breed sa mga blacks din nya.. but like them i also until decided to stop breeding them.. last season super ecxcited ako ilaban sila dahil
