He was partners with Ted McLean and Hugh Norman. He had the hatch fowl of Ted, Green and Yellow Leg. Clarets, Butchers and Choclate Grey's of Hugh Norman. I didnt know any of these gentlemen, but thats what I'm reading in a 08 article of Grit and Steel.

he wrote a article on maintaining a line and he said when you find a family you like to find another family with similar style and looks and get a cock. breed the family pure as long as you can and have a sub family that is 3/4that family and 1/4 outside cock, then when they get to inbred you can use the 3/4 to infuse and freshen them back up.

    Re: harry parr breeding methods

I know he had a breeding book out at one time but I haven't read it. His fowl were the Mclean's which were from Ted, the Chocolate Grey's from Hugh Norman and his Butcher-Clarets which were one family. With his passing I do not know what become of his breeding manual......

    Re: harry parr breeding methods

Concerning Harry Parr's breeding book-- Hugh Norman wrote this book and basically out lined the breeding procedures contained in it. I read the whole manuscprit of the book at Hugh's home about 5 yrs. before Harry had it published. Don't know exact publishing date of the book .The publishing date never interested me because I had already read it's contents except what Harry may have added before it went to the publisher. At the time I resented Harry putting his name on the book that Hugh wrote.
Hugh and Harry were never everyday partners as cockers normally think. Harry backed Hugh at Orlando Tournament at least once, maybe more. Harry was in the insurance business in Baltimore Md., if I remember correctly. I talked to Harry by phone and he mentioned the Squirrels, a family of Hatch type fowl he had. And also the Big Foot Clarets that Hugh gave him.The Clarets had no Butcher blood in them when Harry got them from Hugh. Hugh gave Harry the Clarets because they could not take the close inbreeding that Hugh did with all his fowl. Hugh never owned Butchers.

I believe that Harry said the so call Butcher / Clarets must have spanish blood in them because of the feather quality. Can you shed some light on this ?

Other than Hugh's RH'S , which of Hugh's breeds could also take the close inbreeding by ?

    Re: harry parr breeding methods

Harry Parr was a partner with my next store neighbor. He has taught me manny things. The Chocolate Greys are next store. Harry had many years of the Grit and Steel bound in leather. He then gave them to my neighbor. Now he had fame with what him and Big Pappa called The Squirrels. Now I believe they wer Claret Hatch Grey and there is a picture with the results of the 72 Claymore. The picture I belive was the last Squirrel that won it for them. I think Harry went 5-2 in that one.
The Chocolate s across the street can cross with anything and win. These guys did well with Chocolate Albanys.
From what I understand Harrys father and my neighbors father faught cocks in England together

All of Hugh's fowl were linebred and inbred. These bloodlines included Wardell WH, YL SC Madigan Grey, the dark Law greys, McLean Hatch from Ted McLean and Harry Parr, and the RH from Judge Lacy (2 families). One one visit to Hugh''s in springtime he had 10 pairs of nest bro/sister McLean Hatch from Harry Parr in single mating pens, side by side. He told me you would get varying results breeding this many bro/sister pairs. I was gifted some broodfowl shortly before Hugh died and in these fowl was a very small ST comb Parr McLean Hatch GL hen wheaton color speckled with small black feathers. He said Harry had never let this blood out and to raise all I could from her.
Hugh didn't own any Spanish fowl. So I can't comment about Harry's Butcher/Claret blood.
