Re: Tie cords vs. Dome pens

it depends on how secure your yard is. I have seen hawks get into dome pens and hawks get roosters on cords. I prefer cords but, during some parts of the year I have to pen all my fowl. You see I live right in the middle of the Cooper Hawk migration area. So I get hit in the spring and then again int he fall. In all honesty I am still trying to recoup my loss from when a mink hit me few years back. So it hard to say what one is actually better another factor would be how often you move your dome pens. The reason i say that is unless you have very busy roosters there will always be fresh grass on a cord.

i know the hawks can kill hens ,chicks and stags but i really doubt they can kill a two year old cock with spurs specially those shuffler cocks....

Tie cords are the best of any confinement. The varmits do get a few but what you gain in the bonus of tie cord is well worth it to me.

Tie cords adds so much to them if you have the space and area to put them on tie cord it is so much btr for your fowl yea as chicken men we will lose some fowl during our years at some point but you if possible and have the money put u a fense round ur birds and get you two great perinese dogs and you will lose very few just my thoughts goodluck

We have Red Tailed Hawks here, and although they can't kill a 2 year old those talons sure put big holes in them.

put a blinking strobe light by your cords this will blind the owls and they will not mess with the fowl..

I like them both. However given the space we have i keep most of my birds penned up. I only have 12 cocks on cord... Good Luck..

Re: Tie cords vs. Dome pens

If I had enough space I would definately have most of my birds on tie cords but I also believe that the dome or scratch pen has its place in the rotation of fowl. I used to rotate my birds around on cords when I still lived with my parents and had plenty of room, but since I have my own place now I have found that when rotated between the cords and domes they are much more active and feel alot better. I like the idea of locking up the barrel at night. Little extra work but would be worth it. how do you fix your doors? solid or weld wire or something? Thanks,

then my buddy told me to get some plastic geese and put them
out in the open where the hawks could see them and they wouldnt come
around ,so we did ,i know it sounds crazy, but so far so good, havent
    seen one in a while

I keep the piece of the barrel i cut out to make the hole for them to get inside the barrel an punch two or three holes in it an the barrel and then i run a piece of elctric fence wire through the hole so i have a door or i use a piece of rabbit wire an do the same thing.

Re: Pros and cons of having thered fowl

I think it does alot for a roosters mental state to be somewhat free.Conditioning is the other pro my cocks on cords are always in better shape than the ones in pens.
