    Re: building pens

I would not build them due to my roosters are to aggressive for pens like that. My pens used to be like that but, roosters would fly up and try to fight through the wire. Busted heels busted beaks and messed up feet. I eventually hung feed sacks up and fixed the problem.

Building something like those pens I imagine would need a wielder. Then just spot wield the metal on to the frame. Then you can spot wield the hinges on to the frame. Then spot wield the doors on to the hinges.

The other idea would be use self drilling screws with the rubber washers on them. Then you can screw it together and it should hold.

Is the frame of that metal, It looks to me like the frame and the door is tubing. that is a good setup but i would replace the tubing with wood. Unless you having that metal tubing and a welder. Where did you get those pics at bigtyny. I am getting ready to build me some more pens and could use some good ideas

    Re: building pens

We built some wood ones that are 4 foot wide 4 foot deep and 8 foot tall then we put a divider half way up. We are useing them for breeding pens and stag hardening pens. When i get a chance i will get a pic of them there easy to build and you can make them any size you would like. Ours is in our barn but you could put a top on them and alil more cover on em and they would be perfect for outdoors.

There must be someone making and selling them. I have a friend in Granbury Tx, that has a couple that look nearly just like that.

They just dig under the pen if they are hungry enough.

Do not forget to put something to keep them from digging under also.

    Re: building pens

That happend to me . A weasel dug under just enough to get through and made it into a second pen doing the samething . They don't need much room to squeeze under . Now I dig around pens and have the Tin go down a foot underground and no problems since .

    Re: building pens

In our flypens we dug down a foot or so and poured a concrete footer around the sides and back in the front we have pressure treat 2x12 dug down about 6 inches too keep anything from digging in thus far we have been lucky about that part.

best way I found is to tie some wire fence to the bottom of the pen lay it flat on ground and cover with dirt

chicken wire is the best to use the varmint will dig until they hit the wire then they will stop. reason chicken wire is best to use is when they are digging they use their nails once the nail goes into the wire it will rip nail lose and once this happens they will stop. i have built several of these on different walks never lost any to digging in....
