We crossed our pure Roland Democrat Hatch hens with our Philippine Lemon bc with success circa late 80's - late 90's. Their male version are Wine red feather color, and white feet with black spurs. Medium station. A multi-shuffle fighting machine hatch they are.

It was Blondie who took his hatch and claret fowls to Mcrae had them bred.
That was in the 1960's and election time in the US. Democrat, one of the big US political parties, the other is Republican.

My mentor Bill Cleary traded kelsos for democrats (with the Paytons) they were so slow you could time them with a hour glass.

I've had paytons democrats and the thing about them is if you don't know how to feed them they will not work with you . I had some that were the gamest chickens I've seen then I had some that were preety much garbige . They stress to easily and they just don't handel stress well . But if you get the hang of them they can be unstoppable

    Re: Payton's Democrat's!!

Blondie Roland moved to Prattville, Alabama in 1954 and started fighting with Mr. E.P. (Ned) Toulmin and Mr. Elmer Griffin. They fought together until 1960. Mr. Elmer Griffin had gotten some good Hatch blood from J.D. Perry. Mr. Perry had gotten this blood from C.C. Cooke and Mr. E.W. Law while he was working for them in the mid 1940s. The Claret blood that made the other side of the strain came from Mr. Griffin. Mr. Griffin had gotten them from Mr. Madigin. Blondie Rollan took the Hatch and Claret fowl to Mr. McRae to be bred and raised on his farm in Dennis, Mississippi. He raised these and many other fowl for Blondie for several years. When Blondie took some of the stags from the Hatch Claret matings, to his place, in Prattville, Alabama, people coming by the farm to visit would comment on how beautiful they were and that they should have a name. At this time in the 1960s, Blondie was listening to the debates between Kennedy and Nixon. He decided to vote for Kennedy and named his beautiful new strand of fowl Democrats. Kennedy was a winner and so were the Democrats. The Democrats come light to dark red feathered, mostly green and yellow legs with an occasional blue legs, heavy plumage and stand very well and cut excellently. They are dead game. Paul Webster acquired his Democrats from Blondie and Mr. McRae in the early 1960s. Democrats have plenty of power, smart, with a determination to win. Even if they get hurt, they have the desire to come back and be a winner.
    *
Democrats bred by Buddy and Bobby Payton of Alabama. Typically come yellow leg, dark red, heavy plumage, straight comb.

    Re: Payton's Democrat's!!

Way back in the 70's my dad,his partner,my brothers and I were buying stags from Slim Benoist...mostly yellow legged reds as they were the fastest cutting birds and did well on south Texas. One year Slim sold us 3 cocks...2 willow legged Frost greys he said was from Cavazos of San Antonio and 1 red cock he said was a Payton democrat...looked pretty similar to the photo Payton has used in his ad for years. The greys won 4-5 times each, the democrat was a shake.A large rooster that had short legs from the knees down..Well we matched him and my dad's partner over heeled him in my opinion and he was a little too fat also...the bird lost but did not quit....In the late 80's my brother went to a derby at the old Circle Club in Vinton and brought home a short legged runt looking bird and told me this rooster was fantastic...we sparred him and I laughed my ass off..he did not spar well...he had green legs and a very large head.My brother said feed him and he would be back in 2 weeks....2 weeks later he started racking up wins got to 8 and I quit laughing....I bred him on some half hatch half kelso hens I had and all the sons did well......If I could ever find anymore of those runt looking green legged democrats I would buy as many as I could.....if anyone knows where to get them please let me know

    Re: Payton's Democrat's!!

I talked to Shane Deuron a few months ago. He's the grandson of the late Loyce Deuron of the Cardinal Club fame. We watched some videos he had of a main in Mexico and he told me stories as we watched the fights. He said they never lost a main. A lot of the fights we watched were Democrats. He said that year they fought mostly Kelso in the big shows because the Democrats all looked like crap when they boxed them, but when it came time to go to Mexico for that main, all they had left were Democrats. Shane said they look like crap boxing, but they are different animals when they're in the pit. All the fights I watched on that tape had some amazing birds. They all broke extremely well and cut cut cut....and were game as hell, saw a few get hurt early and come back to win....even saw one where their opponent changed their knife hoping the Democrat would die, but when they set them back down he kept fighting and eventually won.

You will be surprised sometimes at the difference in performance from sparring to
fighting heeled up. But you need to know the family well, very few families spar like sh.., and fight real good.
