Yes its normal. In my experience leipers mostly come green legged but every now and then you will get a blue legged one. Since you mentioned the father was crossed with a hatch, it could be that he was blueface hatch possibly?

I see your confusion. Judge lieper HATED HATCH FOWL.. blended wh and blacks to recreate the type. However he swore that did not contain a bit of hatch in them..historically most liepers were blue or slate to dark slate legged some even black and green...so true liepers could come about any variation ..

Leipers are the best green legged fowl for shortknife. They seem to be cut better than your typical power type hatch fowl. At least that has been my experience in short knife.

the old leipers were 3/8 whitehackle 3/8 brownred 1/4 nigger roundread-from what i have read-other people that got them later added hatch to them brcause it was hard to get a pair so they breed to get 1/2 leiper-so now days most leipers are just leiper crosses--jmo

    Re: lieper hatch blue legged

Does anyone in the U.S. still breed them pure without the hatch influence. I would like to have them if I can find em. Any Good Breeders in KY? There is a guy in South Carolina I think that breeds them this way. Tony R. of the old Ronnie Howerton line. I saw them show once, and they were somethin else! Any info about this line or any others? Thanks

I will say this my Leipers come yellow legged and green legged. The man I got mine from his brother got them back back in the 40s or 50s out of KY. No new blood was ever added to them.

My white feet (7/8 Kelso X 1/8 Leiper) BC ( avatar) is still producing some blue legged and dark legged offspring (1/16 Leiper blood). Majority were white feet and the fighting style is in Kelso side.

We cut earlobes 1st, 2nd was the wattles, last was the comb in one day when they reached 8 months old.

On this case, we cut his comb only because it blocked the other eyesight. Basically we dont cut comb/earlobes/wattles for broodfowls.

I definitively agree with Redeyehatch. Their are very few people that have the pure leipers. Most breeders including Harold Brown and Billy Ruble infused Leiper to their Hatch fowl. Their are a couple of old time breeders that have the leipers but will not part with them.

There is some here in KY. Just haven't made it up the right holler yet with enough cash. Most here won't own up to have the old time good stuff. Can't blame them, I'd want to hand it down to my to my Grandkid too.

I was happy to get mine as the man has nobody in his family to carry on breeding of gamefowl. So they got passed on to me as a gift.
