    Spur sharpening machine

I just came from a friends house and he had a spur sharpening machine there he said was made by some guy named Banks. You put the gaff in a vice and the tip is exposed turn it on and it spins the gaff and you use a sharpening stone to re sharpen the point it takes all the guess work out anybody could do it.I just wondered if anyone else ever used anything like this if I can ill post a picture just thought it was neat theres also hardly any heat so it doesn't throw the temper off this thing was probally made 20 or 30 years ago

If theres no water going to them youll ruin your temper and your gaffs will bend and mushroom

theres hardly any heat this way so it doesn't effect temper but if you use a belt sander or bench grinder I definatley agree without water thetemper will be thrown off

This one spins the gaff pretty slow im sure it wouldn't hurt to use some water I think its a better method than any ive tried.

The belt sharpener from http://www.worksharptools.com/ just bought me one today. I previously bought the diamond sharpener pocket one but can't resist buying the belt sharpener.

I can see it being a form cylindrical grinder.
I have though about a set up like that but it would only work with blades that are strait near the points. Like nite owls duke 74 just example. On a natural curved blade or any with a continuous curve, the tip couldn't be ground straight ( concentric) with the blade. It's not that critical anyhow. I'm like Mr Cigar. Just hand grind it slow with water.
I would also like a pic if you can manage. Thanks

    Re: Spur sharpening machine

I know this thread is pretty old but I would like to share some info. I make the Sharpshooter Sharpener. While it is far from "automatic" the sharpening wheel does run very slow and in water. This makes it hard to screw up your knives and gaffs.
Important things to look for when choosing a machine; It cools while sharpening, the sharpening surface is not flat, but slightly rounded. The polish wheel should be soft cloth for gaffs (so it can get into everywhere and not leave flats) for knives, it is the opposite. You want a hard or firm wheel to help retain the shape of the knife (and not try to grab it out of your hand) I'm not trying to do a commercial, I just hope this helps. I have been sharpening these tools for nearly 30 years. Thanks
