Beginner Advice yo can bank on!!!

I've been thinking of a new thread to start that would be of good use for the beginner. I would ask that the each person give 2 or 3 tidbits that might help the new folks in the gamefowl adventure. Only proven advice need be given.
1st thing I would tell a beginner is the vast majority of your best fowl will be fowl that is gifted. I understand that everyone can't be gifted fowl, so therefore you have to spend money. Do your homework and really learn all you can about the fowl you are thinking of purchasing. Go vist the seller and if you can take an experienced trusted cockers with you. I advice you not to get chickens just for the sake of getting chicken. In the end you would be advised to start out with no more than 2 good solid families that comp. Each other. If both of them families come from the same man you would be miles ahead. The second thing I would advice is have good secure facilities already in place before you ever start this game. This advice is for a man that has his mind made up about what he's gonna do. 3 Expect to have some bumps and bruises and have your feelings hurt, because I promise you they will happen in this game. Might give more later if there is any interest in this thread.

    1. don't buy names make sure what you get is still able to compete. 2. always feed the best and keep the water clean and full. 3. handle them as often as you can except during the molt.

Don't doctor anything if it gets sick he will never be what his brother will that didn't get sick .when just starting you try to acquire as many as you can but it will cost you in the long run .and don't get to many fowl. You can only take GOOD care of so many.

Don't come into this hobby with the mindset that you gonna make a living raising gamefowl. Because you will be disappointed and starve most likely.

If I had to start all over I would befriend some cockers and go to shows with them and pay close attention to who was the toughest entry there day in and day out and once I made my mind up that I liked what he had I'd try my best to buy brood stock from that person there is only one way to known if a family is worth feeding and you can't determine that by walking through a farm looking at them

Maximize your ground to its fullest... If you have room to house 50 head just house around 20. Fresh ground is the most important thing to fowl I'm my opinion.

I understand that this thread is to help the beginner. I don't want to be negative in anyway, but just like the great johnny moore said in grit and steel " you can't tell a beginner anything " . only a few will take advice and the rest just have to learn on their own. I will say one thing, once the pocket book gets a little low , only then will most start to listen . best advice I would give is don't read all the ad's on pit aids for your cocks in the keep go natural and stay close to an old timer that can win with his own line of fowl !

This is one that many take years to learn. Now how to feel a cock or stag to tell how much fat he is carrying. Learn how to take it off slow.

Before you get some birds build a good fence with hot wire. Build good pens and have extra. Find a good guardian dog and then you ready for a few birds.

That's one way, but from experience if you have the money or willing to wait until you get the money, build you a 5 to 6 ft solid fence, all the way around your yard. Then run you a strain of hot wire around the outside if your fence about a foot from your fence to discourage digging under. We've always had a an electric fence around our yard, it helps good with cats coons and possums, but for foxes and hungry dogs it just ain't enough. A Great fence to protect the fowl that you spend alot of your time with, watering, feeding, moving, worming, delousing all year for long four year after year. Just takes one day or night to put you back to square one. I have thanked the Lord everyday since last Wednesday that I still have most of brood fowl. But it was a long two years waiting for those Boston Radios, Bostons, and Gilmore Radios to turn two so I could see the gifts they possessed. One early morning put an end those aspirations.

Join your state's game fowl breeder association. Don't buy anything, sooner or later someone will give you a few pullets and a rooster, but don't be a rooster moocher.

This isnt like taking up a new sport or a new hobby. Its more like a having a second wife with a second part time job. Its very demanding. Its 98% work!! If your not into a second wife or adding another job to your existing one. This game aint for you.
You want the 2% high from this game? Go to a casino. Its cheaper.

Excellent piece of advice. I have seen a bunch people freaking out that they might not be able to get water soluble anti biotic, If your fowl can't get over it himself it's time to cull.

My advice is this. Before you buy any Gamefowl. Build a hot fence. Then build 20 4x4x4 dome pens. Make sure you have a good dog. If dog is not chicken broke buy a shock collar from Dogtra. After high voltage no dog will chase chickens.

There's no worst blind man than the one who doesn't want to see. If they're no good, they're no good... Don't make excuses for them if you've taken good care of them. Many will feebly peck when they should be swinging.

Keep very good records, that is one thing that most all good cockers have in common. To be successful in the breeding department you must mark your fowl and keep meticulous records. You just gotta know where your best fowl come from so you can breed to that direction. Single mate as much as possible. That way you can sort the wheat from the chafe. That doesn't mean that after you get your fowl figured out that you cant do some group breeding for battlecocks. But to maintain your family's you must single mate and work towards making different lines within each of your familes.

I am going on my second year raising gamefowl here in the US. It's definitely not for everyone but I am having fun with them. Definitely lots of learning the hard way and can be expensive for sure. But I am a single parent to 2 boys and besides spending time with my kids, there is no where else I would rather be but in my small backyard farm.

My advice......This is very time consuming....if you want to do it right. Your going to get out of it what you put into it,eventually. Also be prepared to hear a TON of BS. Just like anything else Also your first fowl should be in a predator proof pen and a pen they won't mess themselves up In. Don't use open 2x4 wire so they can get there heads chewed off by a varmint in the middle of the night. Wrap some chicken wire around all of it. Make sure the wind won't blow it over either. Damn. I could go on and on. Lol. I'm done. Good luck. Yfis.
