    Corn Shucks

Seems like it's almost impossible to find good corn shucks anymore. Can someone tell me where you can buy them these days? If I can find them I'll hook on the trailer and take off. I need enough to fill 20 flypens.

    Re: Corn Shucks

I got 20 bale from a guy in Prague last year that had about 100 in his barn, I don't think you'll find any whole shucks like we used to get though ... they bale the cob , stalk and shredded stuff off the field ... I wonder if the good kind was baled in the barn when they seperate the corn from the husk.

How much corn shucks do you put on each flypen, by the way?

    I've always used hay.

    Re: Corn Shucks

Most bales I seen last few years was 1/4 the size weight of normal square bale. They bale them for halloween decorations why they small. Just the shucks whole shucks like they use to be.

Good clean shredded husks are hard to find. The best came from corn cob pipe manufacturers you only get the inner husk but they are not shredded.

Down south here you just pull up to the field when they harvest the corn and rake all you want, most farmers down here will say help your self.

I hear you, I don't want the stuff with junk all in it. Buddy of mine Alabama said they carry some out there at one of the feed stores. May have to check it out.

    Re: Corn Shucks

Cheap Johnson grass is a good alternative, way cheaper and easily found. Round bale will run ya the same as a square bale of shucks. Don't over look the last cutting of alfalfa either. It's mainly stem-cow hay anyhow

I get fresh corn husks from grocery stores and when I go to farmers market to eat roaster sweet corn. Only problem is you still need it to sun dry before using it.

Dang, you would have to eat a pile of corn to fill 20 fly pens.

If you're in central Florida try the Zelwood sweet corn festival. Tons of them go out in the trash. Sure they would let you haul off all you could. Have a great time and go home with a truck load.

No. Only use it for the ones I'm conditioning. Other people that buy corn take out the corn husk and dumped them in the box with plastic bag. You can ask the grocery clerk for the filled up bag of corn husk, same way at the farmer's market.

    Re: Corn Shucks

A lot of good stuff gets wasted in the U.S. and just get thrown out off the dumpster. Same as in the Philippines. The Koreans in the Philippines buy close to rotting veggies in the market and feed them to hogs. Bakery products in the U.S. also get dumped in trash bins. Food that could be reuse to feed animals. Restaurants in Las Vegas have pig farmer's collecting the left over food.
