You can win the majority with them but in gaff , it's hard to not have that one fight where they blow it and lose because they aren't a true gaff bird.

The crosses never get near the smarts and ability of the pure ones , but they do add cut and hustle ....
Thanks a ton ive been tryin to figure them out i have im really interested in this breed.....what about a cross with ruble hatch

Duke Hulsey also had a line of pumpkins. They were 100% pea comb I believe. My father had them for years and they crossed great with his HH Moore clarets.

You may want to try a Butcher/Claret, Butcher/Roundhead or Claret/Roundhead under your cock.

Some of the best pumpkin hulseys are in hawaii. Pure as they come. Straight comb yellow leg. White leg version also. High flying. Hawaii is where carter made a name and most of his sales.

Breed out the white hackle blood in them and go for the dark pumpkin hulsey with all black tails and they are relentless and machine guns and smart up up birds

Halsey/hatch is cross known in Hawaii. I did it in reverse hatch rooster over Hulsey hen. Power over cut, but that was awhile back. Post the pics

    Re: Pumpkin Hulsey

I have some biddies on the ground right now that are Pumpkin Hulsey on the hen side and Line-red Hulsey on the cock side, the cock looks like a white-hackle and the hen is a light roan pumpkin color, the biddies are from a light roan to a dark roan(pumpkin) in color. I have 2 Herring Red Quill pullets that I will be breeding to my Miner Blue cocks when they mature, I made this cross 20 years ago with Eslin hens and it turned out very good.

The best cross ive made was with roundhead and claret and white gold...the roundhead/pumpkin and claret/pumpkin have been winning alot and multiple times per bird..they are very accurate and smart and hard hitting..just one touch and the other side is flat tire and dying or dead...been showing them in long knife and short knife

    Re: Pumpkin Hulsey

Larry had a few Pumpkin over Bates Grey without the Golden blood . Just yl , dirty Grey . They woulda been my favorite for gaff .. They read the other cock and super slippery but not exaggerated moves just to show off .
