I'm no claret expert but like many different breeds they not all the same. Probably have some of the same blood in them but different also. I guess the originals were Madigan but there are many more like HH Moore, Griffen etc. My father bred HH Moore clarets for close to 40 years. They come from Thomas Chandler who fed for Mr. Moore. His mostly come yellow legged. He liked the light side best but kept a dark side that were very strong and would breed them with the light ones.. He would get a white one about 1 out of 100.

Back in the 70's and 80's, when you saw Madigan Clarets, you saw power cocks. Who still has the old powerful Madigans, cocks with so much power that they would kill another cock sparring?

Powers nullified with accurate steel. I have a friend I hate to spar with. He has very powerful birds. Seen them break backs. Id much rather go against him in the heel. Its far easier.

Larry Carter had some , they could and kill plenty sparring. He won 2 Hawaiin Derbies With em. Power works when they axe you in half on the break

It also worked in the gaff when they drove the gaff so hard that it put the other cock into shock.

If you ever get one let me have it ... or a Sport. Mr Madigin did state he would get a yellow leg but most folks bred away from them and the recessive gene has become very rare. Same with the Butcher. Most breeders have bred to the pearl leg side and the yellow leg is all but gone from them also. Having a family with all black spurs is a rare find indeed. The first Clarets came our way were really classy. One out of 20 or so would come white. We got a few black spurs and an occasional yellow leg. They won many derbies back then at Woodside and Boxwood. These came from a very old man in Starr, South Carolina. They had a strong tendency to side step. Another man in Abbeville walked and raised Fowl for Madigin. He got them bred to 7/8 Madigin and 1/8 Bell Roundhead. His were Red and Grey. Another group nearby got their Clarets from EW Law. The Claret made history in the Carolinas and the Hatch Claret made a stunning debut here in the 50's.

Damn thats a nice one! Seen some from Cigar look like Tiger tanks, wide and powerful looking birds and they can hold their power. Not sure if they were straight Claret or Hatch Claret but they had all the features of his Claret. I know he doesnt need it and its not a plug but if I were looking for Claret, Id look no further. Having Cigar in the forum is like a gold mine to get some damn good, old school Claret blood. And if I ever need some more Mug and I will because nothing lasts forever, Im looking to Del. Id take advantage of the opportunity of who we have here among us, many have excellent lines.

I like clarets that make half sidestep only & quick to throw the counterpunch. Is it true that claret is the winningest bloodline in the US? Or is it the allen roundheads?

I crossed Clarets with Murphy, Brassback albany and the old Shawlneck blood and the crosses are great side-steppers and they have this cunning ability of flying into another rooster at the right moment and they almost always hit their mark. I think this ability is deeply rooted into their family.

In the late 70s and throughout the 80s, mostly heard in those years were Hatch Claret and Hatch Kelso for the most part. Im sure for those that kept the families intact since then continued to do well long thereafter.
