Re: Black Hatch Farm Keep and Care System
I'm curious Mr John, when it said you put them to bed on a roost pole during the keep, do you mean out in a fly stall or in the cock house?
Only reason I ask is the last week of the keep with us we kept them inside the cock house at nite and put them out in the fly stall, walk pen, or scratch pen during the day.... We do have mini roost poles for em built into our keep boxes though.

I'm pretty sure he means in the rest boxes during the tapering period or in your case when you bring them in at night the last week, the mini roost poles like you said..I would keep them under them until show day take them away first thing in the AM..But I'm sure you already do that anyway

yeah, they got loaded into carrying boxes in the weeeee hours of the morning in most cases...
I just ask because I know several people who put em back out side at night and get em up in the morning, I never really liked that method because depending on the weather the results were hit and miss.
I'm no great feeder, to be honest we keept em up the last week so we could moniter their droppings, that way on show day we would know eactly how they'd be responding to the feed...
I will also say this... this whole procedure is almost identical to our old way of doing things, down to the pointing feed being cracked corn and rice... only exception is we don't add the buttermilk. we use canned milk.
And come show time we would feed em cracked corn if too wet and wet boiled rice if to dry. Like I said though.... I'm no magic feeder, if they weren't pretty rite by the time we turned weights in, it was normally to late for em... I have to say though, the shows we went to were probly significantly smaller and shorter than the big meets Mr. John was fighting at where he had time to adjust em.

Me neither trust me I've lost more than I've won in all my years just things are clicking a little better in the last few , I'm refering to having them at a cockhouse at the pit depending on how far it was from Johns home he more then likely hauled them a day or two prior and kept them at the pit in his cockhouse and in his stalls with mini roost poles (Assuming that was the case). If he was talking bout putting them in stalls every night of the keep I still think he meant the mini roost poles just makes sense if your feeding dry in the AM and wet in the PM you want them to be craw empty atleast by the next feed, or atleast I do, hence why he makes a refrence to digesting better if I read it right. But wouldnt want them in the stalls every night during the hole keep just the last few days.
If by the time that weigh slip gets turned in and they aint how you want them you better hope they call you late but as luck always has it when that happens everything goes wrong and you'll be called in the first group..ha ha
When it was legal of course.

I agree with ya on all points....
I do however feed in the stalls every nite for the last 2 weeks for their nite feed, to me it is one more chance to handle them, and gets them used to spending some time in the stalls before pointing time. I weighed them every night before putting them into their keep stalls for supper. This way I could look back on the records and see how consistant their weight has been.
I would also kept records on their weight from the time they were selected to be put in the line up which for me was normally 3 or 4 weeks out.
The way I fed, I would try and feed them every grain they can eat and not gain weight. Most of the time their weight would fluctuate a little at the beginning of the keep, but normally would level out after the first week.

Re: Black Hatch Farm Keep and Care System
I was curious on exactly what Mr. Slavin means by outdated. I would think what worked good then, would still be just as effective today.

Re: Black Hatch Farm Keep and Care System
Mr. Slavin is the main reason for the extra cookhouse time to increase rest?

Re: Black Hatch Farm Keep and Care System
Just curious Mr. John... did you ever feed em the gelitin/sugar mix when traveling them to the bigger shows?
I've heard about it, but never tried it.

OnPoint:
You are a very thoughtful person sharing this very logical information in a time of distrust, greediness, total chaotic World as we live in it daily. We fowl lovers have never been 100% believing the same way as we should, or they would have never taken our 10,000 year old rights away from us. You are everything we all should be for sharing like you just did. Thanks from Oklahoma for your time and thoughtfullness in helping your fellow gamefowl friends.

Mr. Slavin, in what ways is this keep outdated? Would you mind updating it a little for us beginners here on this site?
