Question Mosquito issues

im wondering if anyone could offer some advice on how to control mosquito's in the chicken yard. I know standing water, tall grass, etc but is there any other ways to keep them under control? i had a real problem recently and lost around 70 young and older chicks. i could not figure it out no matter how many times i looked at vet manuals online so i took 3 that were still alive to gonzales texas to a lab to have them dissected and have blood work done. the symptoms were swollen sinuses, watery/pus filled eyes that would seal shut and yellow crap in the mouth. occasionally a few spots that looked like pox on the heads. even the vet was a little confused at first. after blood work was sent to texas a&m the results were fowl pox both wet and dry forms along with a secondary infection in the eyes due to MOSQUITO'S biting the eyes of the birds while they slept. i vaccinated the remaining biddies and chicks but i still get an occasional eye problem and cant figure out how to keep the mosquito's under control. none of my adult fowl have this problem as they typically have their heads tucked under their wing at night but most of the older chicks i have penned up in a large coop arent tucking in their heads. i dont get it cause its dry as hell around here. if anyone can offer something useful in the terms of mosquito control i would really be grateful.

Re: Mosquito issues

Sounds like pox to me. Vaccinate them with pox vaccine and that should fix your problem. Until then rotate antibiotics and vitamin/electrolytes through their water it won't cure them but it will help.

Also the company "off" offers a mosquito yard spray. I haven't used it but they say it works.

Go to Walmart buy a lot of tikki torches and put them all around you're yard . Seriously I have no clue if this would work , but hey it's worth a shot if you're desperate I don't see why a bunch of them wouldn't work

Re: Mosquito issues

Plant citronella around the yard. It is a natural mosquito repellant.

Re: Mosquito issues

Mosquitoes is an environmental problem. You can try to control them around your yard, but they will fly from neighboring places. It gets worst when there is standing water or to many fruits on the ground. The worst thing that can happen is when it gets on the chicks eyes. Like Mason Farms said add antibiotics to their water. Put some Terramicin Oftalmic oilment on them eyes, that helps, but shurely it is difficult to control it. Many times it gets on my nerves and just cull them.

I totally agree. You don't want secondary infection to hit them. Secondary infection is like a cold or other disease symptoms that a bird will get when his resistance is down due to his antibodies fighting the fowl pox.

Small fire to smoke them out.

Good Luck

Re: Mosquito issues

You can get the spray that you attach to a water hose at walmart and spray around the yard in the bushes etc. Also I put up bug zappers up in my chicken yard with the co2 carteridges they say thats what they are attracted to you can also get replacement cartridges for them. They have been bad this year here to worst I have ever seen here.

Re: Mosquito issues

To start with clean up the area of all items and areas Mosquitos can breed. Spray Baygon in dark areas around pens, cages ect. Plant Neem trees they are native to the Philippines and are readily available there.( neem is a natural repelant)

Hope this helps

Cheers

I have citronella planted all over my yard as well as spraying twice a year during mosquito season. I have a 25gal tank that sprays a 6' wide swath that I pull behind my tractor and I use malathion. I still have some mosquito's but not nearly as bad as I would if I didn't spray, and have the citronella.
