Absolutely! Anything that affects health has a contribution to performance...be it 5 or 10%.

Re: cleaner environment for chickens

I clean my yard up practically every day! Underneath pens, inside flypens, scratch pens, running pens and whatever needs to be cleaned! I move my portable pens often, making sure my birds are always on green grass, at every 2 or 3 days! Their feed cups are washed everyday and water cups every other day if they need to or not! I found that the best rake to use to remove chicken poop from my pens is my nephews beach rake, the ones that comes with a childs toy set for the beach! It's small enough to move around in their pens with out it getting caught up on the wire!

I think a clean environment is extremely important. But I have to agree with you I have been to yards that were disgusting! My wife wouldn't even get out the truck. Man this guy fights super tough. I couldn't help but wonder how tough would the birds be in our care. But I couldn't bring myself to bring one of his birds to my yard after having lived in that filth.

Re: cleaner environment for chickens

Extremely important? Yes it is. Our Gamefowl have gone a long ways, improving enormously in their appearance, their performance and overall disposition due to good environment. Free range, good feeding and watering, well constructed pens (brood, fly, scratch, brooder) for protection from predators, teepees, good reiable equipment (incubator), good preventive and treatment program. All these I believe improves overall quality and performance of our birds, due to the benefit of good environment.

Good Luck
