Thanks to these Bacolod friends
This May, BEECOOL (Johnny O.) joined me and my handlers in our annual visit to Bacolod to see a few new farms and to share catch-up news/ talk with some old friends.
Thanks to these breeder/friends who spent their time and food and drinks in accomodating us. Its always fun and educational to visit this sabong mecca. Every year, I get more and more surprised at the quantity and quality of their produce, especially the small and backyard cockers. (Just what is the definition of backyard, for some of these guys had nice set-ups with easily over a hundred fowl per "small farm".
Johnny, posing in front of one of the range set-ups of Murcia Vice Mayor LINO SANTIAGO, A great lunch, tons of great talk from a simple, humble friend and a very good cocker. Couldn't refuse when we offered to purchase his personal selection of a derby line-up for a coming promotion.

Sad to hear from Mang Lino S. that their boss and benefactor, ALEX MONTELIBANO, one of the old-time cocking greats, passed away last April 5. His son to inherit and run this beautiful farm and the thousand heads of fowl?

A lot of Bacolod " small-time" breeders serve as satellite farms to the "big Boys". They only lack financing and marketing. Their own produce can easily stand up to the more-famous and branded names of Phil. cockfighting. They just need a few breaks and exposure. This will be my little contribution to addressing those needs.
A valid case in point is Peter "ANGOK" Montesa. After 11 years of partnership with Boy Lechon de Roca, he's now on his own. Sales are very very good. Out of 700 birds produced in his 1st solo season, barely 40 remain unsold and his new clients now are a veritable list of Whos Who in the local fighting scene. Stag buyers are on Waiting List. Great blacks, also great Reds, with dirty white feet. Would you believe, he now has his own satellites?
You may not know it but some of the birds you admired in Araneta or San Juan may have come from this simple breeder. Sure to hear more from him in the near future.

In behalf of Mr. Lino Santiago, thank you for the nice words that you've said. You will always be welcome on his farm.
He's an uncle of mine.

This is backyard?
In many areas in Bacolod, breeders abound. In Concepcion, ChoCho Distrito, (09107344038) , originally breeding in Kabankalan, and who calls himself small-time but with 600 stags produced this season, told me that the great Lance De La Torre, organized a cooperative of small time breeders ... a great move that will surely help these very capable guys.
In Sta Cruz, Murcia, in a long stretch of kilometers of breeders, this is what I saw this trip. A vast improvement from a few years back. Its not uncommon to see a set-up with over a hundred stags produced.
JORY GRAVENO (09197774345) owns this bful set-up.

Another of the many farms in Sta Cruz, Murcia. This one owned by Harry TOTO Hanaya, (09196141534) who also brought us to the other farms. Makes me and my handlers want to buy instead of breed, what with the great climate and environment for raising gamefowl here in Bacolod.

W O W
Been around a lot. and, Just when I thought I had seen it all.....
Visited Lunao before but was the 1st time to actually see and talk to BOB CUENCA in his mountain retreat. Farm? That wasn't just a farm... it was a country club, a resort, a garden (Flowers that reminded Johnny and I of Butchart Gardens), an idyllic escape from normal life.... all combined into one. They were harvesting strawberries, green peppers, bananas, lettuce by the sacks. Mr Bob had imported goats, geese as well as his formidable fighting cocks. It gets so cold on top of the mountain that imported plants and flowers were thriving. Hot spring too within the premises, soon to be developed. And a View to die for.
Thanks to Mr Cuenca for accomodating us. He must have noticed all of our mouths agape in awe at his place. Busog na sa paningin, sarap pa ng Kape at crackers. Thanks also to Lunao landlord Nanette Milabo, noted photographer of most of your pictures in those magazines and posters of Feed Companies.
A lot of farms have awesome birds. This one is the most awesome place. Heck, we even forgot to hold any of the birds.

Problem when you visit even these small breeders is you and your handlers feel like bringing all those birds home, just like a confused child let loose in a candy shop. And when you get home, you're not as enthusiastic about your own birds, hehe.
Yayay Borja, one of my handlers, grabbing hold of this cock of Baby Chua in Bago , Bacolod. Thanks to JACK N., former manager of this farm and Winning handler of San Juan COl./Bong Pineda in the 8 cock SAN JUAN Intl.,who toured us here and in La Carlota, together with Anthony Bobot Chua. So many beautiful birds here.
Everywhere we went, Yayay, Benny and Nene were always holding birds and asking, "Boss, pwede bang iuwi na ito? Kursunada ko lang."
"Lahat naman kursunada niyo, eh. when we win the lotto", I always reply.

Bro chili_sm many thanks for posting this thread in here. This thread in a way will give some of our brothers here an insight on what and how are the farms in Negros occidental are like albeit small or big breeders. Most of the time evryone is equal in terms of having quality fowl and sometimes farms. I myself comes from bacolod and i tell you what i wouldnt swap this province to anywhere else, just my 69 cents guys.......MJF

Chili_SM.,
Thanks for posting pics of different farms in Negros. Even though I am from this island, I still get amazed at the old and new farms sprouting in the mountainous area of the island. There are hundereds of breeders that were never heard but have excellent fowls.
Lunao is home to NGBA stalwarts such as Juancho Aguiire, Ampil Bros, Bob Cuenca and many upcoming breeders. Beautiful scenery and abundant supply of spring water. A perfect place to visit during the summer months.
Nanette Milabo is a good friend of mine. She showed the area and requested that I moved my farm there. A great photographer who is very passionate about game fowl and farms she captured for different magazines. Her great grandfather, Gen. A. Araneta used to own this hacienda.
Did she show you an overflowing pool of spring water coming down from the top of the mountain?
Hope to retire there like my Idols... Working on acquiring some properties there for future plans. Loved this area...

Always somthing to learn from visiting farms, even small, backyard (?) set-ups. The level of knowledge and experience in Bacolod is arguably the highest in the country. So, its always educational and fun. Find the time, gather some friends, contact some honest breeders and travel to Bacolod. Even if you're not buying, always Worth the trip.
Benny, a friend , admiring the simple, but effective set-up of breeding pens up in Lunao. Sure to replicate the good things he learned from this Bacolod trip.
