If your rooster crows before you pit him he's saying good bye. You need to set him on the ground to get rid of the bad omen.

If the rooster is the only one crowing in the middle of the night. Fight him and he will win that day.

If the rooster gets out of his holding pen he will surely win, so fight him that day.

If the sultada before your fight ends up in a draw, enter the pit last.

These are superstition only...believe at your own risk!


They said that On fight day, once you left your house or yard with your rooster, you must go straight to the cockpit. Turning back or dillydallying will cause a bad luck.

They said that On fight day, when you take your rooster out of his pen or resting stall, leave the door open and never put another cock in there. Leaving the door open means that your rooster will come back alive while putting another cock on his stall would mean that you’re putting a replacement cock on his stall and pre-empting that he won’t be back.

Don’t fight your rooster if someone within your immediate family is ill or bedridden.

Never have a hair cut or cut your fingernails during fight day. Don’t ask me why...sabi lang sa akin ito ng matatanda! LOL!

At the “rueda” some handler (after removing the scabbard) throws the “bayna” across the opponent’s side (of the rueda)...it’s a symbol (daw) of conquering the other cock.

At the “rueda” some handler will walk around (paikot) the other handler (holding the cock)...they said the purpose is to ward off or lose the effect of whatever virtues (oracion/agimat) they have.

At the “rueda” don’t accept your opponent’s offer of handshake...only after the fight is over can you accept his congratulatory gesture. Accepting your opponent’s offer of handshake before the fight is like accepting (daw) your defeat.

During a drag fight, some handler blows (like a whistle blow) the “bayna” to keep their cock’s strength or keep him awake.

For good-luck, some handler (as they enter the pit or “rueda”) will stroke or touch the winning cock of the previous fight.

Some old folks puts a lucky charm or “agimat” (daw) at the tari’s padding or sapin.

My lucky charm rituals or “pahiyang”...I always give my son a hug before going to the cockpit.

P.S.

There’s another handler’s ritual at the “rueda” that I’ve observed...while billing or warming up their cock at the “rueda”, if some feathers fall off their rooster the handler (or his assistant) would pick it up and put it in their pocket. Anybody knows the reason why?

Most of today’s cockers especially the newer generations are of the modern type and for every seemingly phenomenal in nature that happens in sabong, they tend to seek for the explanation in a scientific manner rather than in a supernatural way. Perhaps the richness of the Filipino culture in folklore and anecdotes had contributed to the many pamahiin that we have in sabong. But it can’t be denied also that there are occurrences that science can’t explain...mystery that baffles the doubtful and brings faith to the believer. I’m the type of cocker that doesn’t easily believe in pamahiin but neither would I condemn it. They said that in order for an “agimat” to become effective, you must first have faith and believed in its power...otherwise it won’t work. I believe that most faith healers cured the sick not because of the healer’s faith alone but mostly by the faith of the patient itself. My point is that pamahiin is not the norm for success but if it proved effective to you then let it work to your advantage. Just my opinion.
