Mamiit lalaro sa RP Davis Cup team

Nadaan sa mabuting usapan, napapayag ng Philippine Lawn Tennis Association (Philta) si Fil-American netter Cecil Mamiit na maglaro sa darating na Asia-Oceania Group II Davis Cup tie competitions sa Marso 6-8 sa Hong Kong.

Ibinunyag kahapon ni Philta president Jolito Villanueva na nagkasundo na sila ni Mamiit kung saan kakampanya ang 32-anyos na two-time South-east Asian Games singles gold medalist sa Davis Cup at sa 25th Southeast Asian Games sa Laos sa Disyembre.

Nauna nang nagdalawang-isip si Mamiit bunga ng inaasahang malaking kawalan niya ng perang makukuha mula sa pagsali sa ATP Tour of the Challenger sa United States.

“He was asking for certain conditions at that point in time,” wika ni Villanueva sa world ranked No. 430 na si Mamiit. “It is not only within the realm of Philta but it has also have something to do with other (international tennis) bodies.”

Ayon sa isang source, binayaran ng Philta si Mamiit ng $10,000 sa nakaraang dalawang Davis Cup tournaments.

“We were able to negotiate with Cecil and told him that this is what we have to offer. I hope there will be no more stumbling block sa paglalaro niya sa atin sa Davis Cup,” wika ni Villanueva. “He has to give up something to be able to play for us. We have to see to it that we will match what he will be losing and a little bit more.”

Inangkin ni Mamiit, naging No. 72 sa buong mundo noong 1999, ang gold medal sa 2005 at 2007 SEA Games at ang bronze medal sa 2006 Asian Games.

Iginiya rin ng tubong Los Angeles, California ang RP Team sa Group I ng Davis Cup noong 2008 mula sa pagkakahulog sa mababang Group III noong 2006 bago nadulas sa Group II makaraang matalo sa Japan (0-5), Uzbekistan (2-3) at Kazakhstan (0-5).

Sakaling manalo sa Hong Kong, makakasagupa ng Nationals ang magwawagi naman sa pagitan ng Pakistan at Oman tie sa second round ng Asia Oceania Zone Group II.

MANILA, Philippines - Johnny Arcilla and Anna Christine Patrimonio came away with big victories yesterday to advance to the championship round in the first Metro Open People’s Championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennnis Center.

Arcilla, the men’s singles top seed, overcame a first set loss to down Jaime Solon, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3, while women’s eighth pick Patrimonio upended No. 5 Jessica Agra, 6-4, 6-2.

Arcilla’s win moved him closer to the top P60,000 purse and an automatic berth in the Philippine Davis Cup team which plays Hong Kong next week in the first round of the Asia-Oceania Zone Group II Davis Cup competitions in Hong Kong.

Out to foil Arcilla is teammate and long-time doubles partner Patrick John Tierro, who beat No. 4 Ralph Barte, 6-3, 6-1, to claim the second finals berth.

On her way to the finals, Patrimonio needed just 35 minutes to bundle out Agra and arrange a championship duel with third seed Aileen Rogan, who beat Ma. Regina Santiago.

Rogan won the first set tiebreak, 7-5, before Santiago retired with a left leg injury.

The 16-year-old Patrimonio, daughter of four-time PBA MVP Alvin, broke out of a 4-all count in the first set by snaring the next two games. She set herself up for the victory with three service breaks in the second frame as she pounced on Agra’s faulty serves, including eight double faults.

Djokovic sets Dubai final date with Ferrer

DUBAI, Feb 27 (Reuters) - World number three Novak Djokovic reached his first final of the season when he beat third-seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon 3-6 7-5 7-5 at the Dubai Championships on Friday.

The Serb will face fourth seed David Ferrer after the Spaniard overwhelmed Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-2 6-2.

In contrast to Djokovic’s two hours 44-minute struggle, Ferrer dominated the match from the beginning to tie up victory in just 75 minutes.

“I fought my way through in the match, really believed till the end and mentally this is a very important win for me,” top seed Djokovic told reporters.

“If I want to stay on top of the men’s game, I have to win these matches because Simon is certainly one of the best players in the world.

“He plays a very unique game. He’s very solid from all sides, and playing with a very small number of unforced errors, which… when you see him, you don’t think that physically he’s that strong and he has great endurance.”

Both Djokovic and Simon struggled to produce their best tennis in the afternoon heat.

Djokovic was especially wayward during the first set and struggled to find any consistency.

Simon, though, was under early pressure as he fought off two break points at 1-1 before breaking to lead 4-2 when Djokovic made a forehand error.

FLAWLESS PERFORMANCE

Both players had their chances to break in the second set before Djokovic broke in the final game with a forehand winner.

Djokovic bounced back from trailing 0-2 in the decider to level at 3-3 when Simon produced a backhand error.

The Serb kept up the pressure and broke for the match after Simon set up match point by netting a low forehand volley.

The Serbian sealed victory with an emphatic smash.

Ferrer produced an almost flawless performance which gave Gasquet little chance to get into the match.

The Spaniard broke in the opening game and then again at love to lead 4-1. Gasquet then fought off four set points on his serve before Ferrer served out the set.

Gasquet earned a string of break points in the second set but was time and again frustrated by Ferrer’s dogged resistance from the baseline.

“This was my best match in the season,” said Ferrer. “In the second set I had a lot of break points down but I fought a lot and was very focused to beat him.”
