good day doc....in your professional opinion would using a dog shampoo such as shellguard have a bad effect in chickens?

I just rinse slightly on the surface then allow to dry out.

It is safe to use dog shampoo on our chickens. The only disadvantage is that their feathers will lose their "protective oils" and thus making it easier for their feathers to absorb water.

I agree. It dries them up too much. Cocks that are predisposed to having brittle wing feathers end up worse.

Re: using dog shampoo for delousing
Some of the branded shampoos on the market can't seem to get rid of the lice and mites completely. My friend adviced me to add Sevin powder.

Re: using dog shampoo for delousing
I use BioSpot Pyrethrin Dip for Cats & Dogs.
Its from the same company that makes Adams Flea & Tick products but BioSpot is more natural.
I mix 4Tbs in a 5gal. bucket & dip up to the ear lobes with it. Then whatever is left over in the bucket you can use to spray down pens or cording areas.
It has Aloe Vera extract & Lanolin which helps the feathers & skin instead of damaging them or stripping natural oils. Plus it has a nice Baby Powder scent!

Re: using dog shampoo for delousing
ive been using dog shampoo for quite sometime now but not that often. after using dog shampoo and i observe that their feathers are clean and lice free, the next time i bathe them i use the fowl shampoos available in the market, that way their feathers dont get damaged easily. i only use the dog shampoo if the lice infestation is quite heavy

Re: using dog shampoo for delousing
Use Adams flea and tick spray and there shampoo to dip them in! Adams also have yard spray which you just attach to your water hose and spray your pens, cord area and cages with! Home Depot also got all kinds of yard insecticide you can use, most are effective on mites and lice! I use the Adams products mostly especially there spray! For the yard, cages and pens I alternate it between the Adams yard spray and different insecticides and powder!
