HATCH IN MY OPPINION CAN CUT, HAVE PLENTY OF BOTTOM AND ARE VERY GAME WITH PLENTY OF POWER. I BELIEVE THEY ARE GOOD FOWL TO USE FOR CROSSING OVER OTHER FOWL.WHILE I BREED ABOUT 60% OF MINE STRAIT I DO CROSS THEM OVER MY WJD_VKD MUFF'S AND WJD_VKD WHITE'S. I ALSO CROSS THE YELLOW LEG AND THE GREEN LEG HATCH OVER EACH OTHER. THIS IS JUST AN IDEA OF HOW I USE MY HATCH. THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT BREED'S OF HATCH.JUST TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA ON DIFFERENT BREED'S OF HATCH I OWN 5 DIFFERENT BREED'S OF HATCH MYSELF. HATCH BIRD'S ARE ONE OF MY FAVORITE BREED'S
I READ IN ONE OF THE GAMEFOWL MAGAZINE'S THAT THE HATCH FOWL WAS A CROSS OF KEARNEY BROWNRED'S AND KEARNEY WHITE HACKLE WHICH WERE BROUGHT OVER FROM IRELAND IN 1870 BY MIKE KEARNEY.ON DOWN IN THE ARTICLE THIS FELLOW SAY'S THAT MR HATCH TOLD HIM THAT HE GOT HIS FIRST ONE'S FROM A MAN IN LONG ISLAND, NY. CAN'T REMEMBER THE MAN'S NAME BUT THEY WERE DARK RED,GREEN LEGGED FOWL. THIS MAN KEPT THE FOWL THE SAME OVER A PERIOD OF YEAR'S. MR HATCH GOT SEVERAL OF THEM,YARDS,TRIO'S,COCK'S,HEN'S.THEY WERE NOT OUTSTANDING FIGHTER'S OR CUTTER'S BUT WERE STRONG GAME AND TUFF,HARD TO KILL . HARRY GENET HAD A FAMILY OF BRIGHT RED FOWL THIS FELLOW IN THE ARTICLE SAY'S THAT MR HATCH TOLD HIM HE GOT ONE OF THOSE COCK'S

Re: Leiper Hatch Blood Composition...
continuation...
FROM HARRY GENET AND CROSSED HIM OVER THE DARK RED GREEN LEG'S FROM LONG ISLAND. THIS IS HOW HIS BREED WAS STARTED.ALSO IN THIS ARTICLE ROBERT LANG'S VERSION FROM LONG ISLAND IS THIS A MAN IN NEW YORK CITY, THAT WORKED IN A LARGE DEPARTMENT STORE, BUT WAS ALSO INTERESTED IN COCKING AND AN ASSOCIATE OF KEARNEY GANG AROUND NEW YORK CITY GOT HOLD OF A KEARNEY BROWNRED COCK AND A KEARNEY WHITE HACKLE HEN. THESE HE PUT WITH THE LATE JUDGE LEIPER ALSO OF LONG ISLAND WHO BRED THEM THIS WAS THE START OF THE LEIPER FOWL. HATCH GOT FOWL FROM JUDGE LEIPER TO START HIS ON FAMILY HE ALSO GOT OTHER FOWL FROM LEIPER OVER THE YEAR'S. THIS FELLOW THAT WROTE THE ARTICLE SAY'S THAT YOU CAN TAKE YOUR CHOICE AS TO HOW THE HATCH WERE MADE.
I PUT THIS ON HERE BECAUSE EVERYONE MAY NOT HAVE A GAMECOCK BOOK BUT. FOR THOSE THAT DO AND WISH TO READ THIS ARTICLE IT IS IN THE
MARCH 2003 ISSUE ON PAGE 50
THIS IS 3 DIFFERENT VERSION ON HOW HATCH WERE STARTED SO WHO REALLY KNOW'S OTHER THAN MR HATCH

Re: Leiper Hatch Blood Composition...
Kearney Whitehackle X Kearney Brown Red cross = Leiper (Judge Leiper breed)
Mr. Hatch breed Leiper X ginger Duryea = Progeny Leiper
dark red, green legged, dead game, hard hitting, plays tough (madidiin pumalo).
Mr. Hatch made many crosses (mclean, brownred, boston roundhead, whitehakcle and leiper) and gave some to Mathesius
Hatch was also friended with Mike and Harry Kearney, Jim Thompson, Joe Crossin, J.W. E. Clark and Simon Flaherty and swap breeds.
With this swapping an infusion of Mr. Hatch Boston Roundhead And Duryea brownreds, Law Greys, Thompson Whites and rest personal breeds among the breeders mentioned, was also possibly infused on the offsprings.
Today some cocks are yellow legged and dark reds others have green legged red, a dark red, rusty red, brownish red and a maroon color.
They are strong, hard hitting, dead game, but some are low headed, dumb and poor cutters.
Dave Ward had Clarets and todays Leipers could also have an infusion of Clarets and they have the Fan like tail looking Leipers...(no wonder there's decrease in gameness but increase in good cutting on todays Leiper).
Hennie Mathesius work for Hatch and infused Morgan Whitehackles (Lowman blood and some Gull/Morgan crosses)
Some of these were crossed on the Hatch fowl and though their progeny looked about the same, they fought better.
They lost a little of their power, but became higher headed, better cutters and won a larger percent of fights.
Some think they lost their extreme gameness, but I think this was the case only in some yards. Last breeders who handle this progeny was Mr. Cooke, a partner of E.W. Law.

Re: Leiper Hatch Blood Composition...
In my time of having the Leiper and McLean....The Leiper having the fan tailed of Clarets, dark mean eyes, winered with lemonhackle ring, some hackle had the hennie hackle (short hackle with white underhackle color of feathers), greenleg, peacomb, medium station, can play up and down, multiple strokes with power (pumuputok), sometimes billholds up in the air and throw multiple strokes....and sometimes not, it depends on the kind of fighting style of his opponent...it has the typical fighting style of Sweaters today....While my McLeans are darker in feather color and just like the old brownreds who attacks like a bull (grounder low fly) and hit and hit anywhere just like a ninja that is invinsible in the eye of the opponent.....as mentioned above some are dead game and some are not....I guess the gamest Leipers today are those backcross to whitehackle and Blueface and they are straightcomb, bluelegged or yellowlegged with winered with redlemon hackle or lemon hackle ring they differ in speed to sweaters because they are very aggressive...some are mistaken nowadays and called them straightcomb, yellowlegged, winered with lemon hackle ring sweaters or others called it boston roundheads...as the old story goes this could be the throwbacks and copies the old lines being used before....Just take note on the breeders mentioned above and today if they are throwbacks...some Leipers would be Hatch brownred, Thompson White, Law Grey, Hatch red, hatch boston roundhead etc...only to find out was on their kind of Fighting Style....just like a combination fighting style of Hennie(speed shuffler), Sweater(stylish), Grey(side stepper), boston Roundhead (power stroker) and Brownred (attacks like a bull and hits hard).
I Bet today that most sweater and Kelso breeders are going to Relative breeding unto Leiper, McLean, Blueface and Gilmore...if i only had the money i can go ahead of time.

Good luck

Re: leiper
