Re: Gonna create the mother of all breeding software
The problem with entering leg color (as well as feather color) is that the recessive gene color doesn't show in the bird (usually anyway, although sometimes there is color patching that gives you clues). So if a person who has a white legged rooster with a yellow leg recessive gene and is breeding to a white leg hen....and he just lists them as white legged cock and white legged hen....that person will freak when he gets white and yellow legged stags, and white, blue (several shades of it too), yellow and green legged pullets. I'm not saying that the software wouldn't be useful and fun, etc., etc, just that you would need to expect complaints from people who don't understand that "junk in = junk out". :-) In other words, if you don't feed in (even the best of programs) the proper information, you will not get the correct answers.

Re: Gonna create the mother of all breeding software
I can't argue that your wrong...in some may complain due ignorance or not understanding of how the genetics work. But if your going to create the mother of all breeding software... i think it should be seriously thought about being in their. Or maybe a separate software all together. I know i would by if it was just this alone by its self.

Re: Gonna create the mother of all breeding software
I agree with cito358, just don't make to complicated. As for genetic make up is concern just leave a blank space under cock or hen genetics and have the individual input there own description or observations of the genetics they are expecting and results of such breeding. Simple! Remember, don't make it complicated.....

What about something on culling. Say you get 8 stag but you only keep 4. I would like to keep that in my records.

Re: Gonna create the mother of all breeding software
If you will use .NET in coding, I might help in the creation of the software.
Meanwhile, I am currently developing a web-based gamefowl breeding management, I'm go'na get some inputs here as well because I am very new to this kind of sport.
It will be hosted soon and I will share it on fellow sabungeros.

Re: Gonna create the mother of all breeding software
The software I use has a entry for the date of death, You could also put in an entry for date of cull and a report that allows you to see all culls and sort them various ways such as by their mother or father or by date of hatch, etc, etc. Just a good report system that is extremely configurable by the user would be helpful.

For me, this is one of the best feature. If this could be added, with affordable gps, we should be able to locate stolen cocks.

Do not overlook weight or maturity tracking, I think this is also important

Med records weight gain/loss during keep/conditioning, feed types and amounts .type of keep and work reps could be helpful but most of all please make it simple

Re: Gonna create the mother of all breeding software
You could do a whole section on the feed. Protein, mixture, different variations and experiments. Anything from chick starter to point feed, this would help out a lot to keep track of what works best.

ZOOEASY, I've been using this breeding software for almost six years, works well with me. I like it, very comprehensive. here's the website: www.zooeasy.com. This software features, poultry files, breeding pairs, finances, logbook and notes, contacts etc. You might be able to add some data to make it more interesting.

C'mon, now is the chance to get your wish list in there before product development starts.
It's easier to put features now rather than after the product releases.
Thanks.

I think to be able to see a long pedigree and inbreeding coefficients like OWL suggested is the way to go.

Two things, Senti. Most people don't like change. They are happy with how they have been doing it for years. Other thing is, there are not that many true breeders out there anymore and the interest in this type of product just doesn't exist.
I have old note books laying around and buried in the corner. I am old enough that I still want to do it this way but young enough to see the benefits of a program like this. For me the one most interesting fact I would like to be able to track would be to track winning percentage of the offspring with a quick reference to compare this against each cross. Also a feeding chart to track diet with winning percentages. This way I could see the results of the feeding regiment. All of this info in a easy to use spread sheet or chart would be beneficial and take up alot less space on a memory stick than 20 note books.
And one other thing. If the info could also take into consideration location of the show and then compare birds, diet and location. This way through experiments with different crosses and diets you could develope a regiment specifically designed for the show location.
Thanks. YFIS, ALM3

Re: Gonna create the mother of all breeding software
Sente,
One feature that would be soo helpful and save breeders YEARS of experimenting.. to be able to come home after the fights and enter a wingband number.. and that roosters entire family tree pops up.. as well as other "winning" wing band numbers that are related to him.. and how they are related to him. ..and what "individuals" in breeding do all of these winning wingband numbers have in common. I think by doing this you may see a breeders brood pens go from.. 10 broodcocks and 40 hens.. down to 4 broodcocks and 10 hens.. QUICKLY!! ..i think it is easy to give the credit for the outstanding individual to the wrong parent. This would totally eliminate that mistake.

Re: Gonna create the mother of all breeding software
..the feature im talking about would only focus on.. wins.. losses.. and wingband numbers. ..simple to enter ..simple to read the results ..simple to find those "golden" individuals after they are identified.
As far as straight comb, peacomb, leg color, predicting the looks of your future baby chicks through genetic probabilities, etc. etc. ..that would be a seperate feature of the software for people focused on those things.
Also I would like to say thankyou for being willing to create a software focused on gamefowl breeders. Great idea!
Thanks,
Mike.

Re: Gonna create the mother of all breeding software
A section that has all different types of toe and nose marks and which ones have not been used. Along with a section identifying their wing or leg band. Make sure it is well protected, password encrypted and that one can backup their files. If the program can set reminders such as time to worm, new chicks born today in pen#2, etc. Also a calender is a must, especially one where they can post notes to, maybe this can lead to breeder's notes or something to that nature. Would the program define a draw as a loss or wouldn't even consider it for winning %? Controversional to some people. How about adding a section of stags/hens/cocks you currently have in the yard, helps one identify how many they really have of each cross. A section where you can add if you sold a bird that includes buyer info. Not sure if this is beyond the program, but a section that has symptoms of illnesses/disease and their cures, making sure to leave breeders notes to add to the cures that we find.
Just some things that came to mind.
If I think of anything else I'll post it.

There is no price yet. It's too early for that. But it will be priced competitively, that's for sure.
Thanks for the inputs!
What about "predictive" feature? Meaning "what if i breed this and that, what will come come out? Aside from bloodline percentages, what about plumage, leg color, combs, etc." I will need a geneticist consultant for this.

@ Senti
This project is good, a well suited breeding management system for game fowls. Count me in, i'm willing to help and contribute some ideas on technical side.

Please make a spot for vaccinations from the first day on and with a monthly or yearly reminder that reminds of each individual if possible. Please let me know when you are ready to test run the program.....I will be a happy purchaser.

based on my own perception and beliefs this is a very simplistic and very true analysis...no intention of creating a stir...or rocking this boat but as I see things in breeding, i choose to adhere to an old greats claim that the only thing certain in breeding is uncertainty.

Re: Gonna create the mother of all breeding software
this is a very good idea... but for people who are not very adept in computers... i think to input the wingband no. and legband no. ... is enough to be able to inquire the regarding the pedigree of the rooster or hen.

It would be very nice to have the calendar and be able to put in the date of each bird on when it hatched.
