It would have to be our Albanys. My partners has all the brood cocks named so we know witch one were talking about every time the conversation comes up. Weve had them for 12 years now and wouldnt trade them for any other blood out there. Plus they were a gift from our mentor and are the best chickens weve ever owned. Let me tell you weve orderd birds from all over the states and never had any that were worth a dam. We call the one in my avatar "Jimbo" named after my partner.

Yea good memories and them good ol brood cocks that have given you so much over the years. If ones been good to me he deserves atleast a cup of feed every day and a hen to keep him company so he is happy for the rest of his days. I had one one time lived to be sixteen the last five yrs i didnt even try to raise off him just let him alone with a hen he finally got so old he went blind and i had to kill him one of the hardest thing i ever had to do with my chickens all the special ones like that i always bury them in my chicken yard.

Re: families of fowl that feel like your real family!!!

I can relate totally. I never considered myself a spangle lover, I have been always YLH man, but my morgan whitehackles are like family. I have had them since my start in 1976, Although I've kept my YLH all these years, I just would not give up these spangled birds. I have had many brood cocks die of old age and have only added blood twice. Although I have several breeds nowdays, I know if it came down to it, these birds will always be with me. One thing about being involved with gamefowl is after many years, it is very clear the true cream of your crops. As of today, I am still not a true spangle man, but the whitehackle has found it's home with me...as family

That is the truth....I have some the same way, I just stick them on a teepee under a nice shade tree that gets some morning sun and keep them clean inside and out, let them live out their days the way they want. Not so long ago my oldest daughter(2nd year of college) asked me when she was in the farm if I still had that chicken I took her picture with when she was a kid, I told her no he died last year but I have many of his sons and daughters if you would like another picture...she just laughed and said she was too old for that now:-(

I agree with you guys I love seeing stags coming up and seeing them reminds you of their grandpa when he was younger. I got my two breeds and I plan on letting my boy have them when I can't do this game anymore. Things change in chickens but the way I see the guys that change breeds every year are like a junk beagle that jumps a rabbit runs it until he hits another trail follows that until the next and so on and so forth. At the end of the day he is no closer to bringing the rabbit back than he was at first. Find what you like and works for us and stick with them Yfis gator

Re: families of fowl that feel like your real family!!!

I like to try new bloodlines, but since 1998 I have had my Cajun Kelsos and Murphys as my main bloodlines. They were originally purchased by my partner from Cedric Burton and then when he decided to sell out, I bought all of the broodstock in 1998. My wife hates the chickens, but she even told me one day that she would not sell the Murphys if something happened to me because I love them so much. It is really a toss up as to which family I like the most.

I guess I am just a sentimental person, but I have added a couple other lines (Wildcat Blues, California Doms) from friends and I plan on keeping them going. Both have their own unique qualities and for me personally are worth maintaining.

Re: families of fowl that feel like your real family!!!

Around here its the kelso's. I have some other bloodlines but I just breed a few of them for crossing with the kelso. I feel like to have one main bloodline that I can concentrate on and raise lots of pure to give me a good selection, I can keep that family coming better each year. Dont really raise enough to breed a lot of pures of 3 or 4 different families. I only raise a couple hundred a year so space is limited.

My Laws, Lacy, & XYZ hatch. These 3 family's just suit my idea & standard. Mainly HONEST fowl. I have a few other trios & pairs I'm trying out the bar is pretty high before I can call them one of "MY family".
